Advanced Allergy Asthma & Sinus Care

What Causes Allergies Or Allergic Responses

Advanced Asthma, Allergy & Sinus Center on TOP Doctors Interviews | Maryland’s Top Allergist

Allergies, medically known as Allergic Rhinitis is an immune disorder where the body picks up on the presence of foreign substances known as allergens. Allergens can be everything from dust, pollen, or aerosols, to certain foods or substances such as peanuts or lime juice.

The allergic reaction originates within the immune systemit treats harmless allergens as something threatening. When that happens the body releases a substance into the bloodstream known as histamine. You probably know that term if youve ever shopped for OTC allergy medicine and seen antihistamines.

Its because of your sinuses, which are air-filled membranes within your skull in the facial area near the brow. They are connected to your nasal passages by a series of tubes or channels that are collectively known as the osteomeatal complex. Because of this complex, air can flow from your nose into the sinuses. This in turn makes it possible for mucous to drain from the sinuses into your nose.

What Happens During An Asthma Attack

People with asthma have sudden attacks when the airways in their lungs get narrower and breathing becomes more difficult. Airways are the paths that carry air to the lungs. During an attack, the sides of the airways in your lungs become inflamed and swollen. Muscles around the airways tighten, and less air passes in and out of the lungs. Excess mucus forms in the airways, clogging them even more. The attack, also called an episode, can include coughing, chest tightness, wheezing and trouble breathing.

If you or a loved one have symptoms of asthma or asthma attacks, we can help.

An advanced care plan can help!

An advanced care plan formally gives the person you choose the ability to make decisions about your care for you when you cant. This person is called a substitute decision maker.

Its about communicating to them what your wishes, values, and beliefs are, so they know how to make serious decisions about your care

Its best to talk to your substitute decision maker now about what you want, in case they need to speak for you in the future.

So, who should have an advanced care plan?

Dont wait.

What Is Asthma

Asthma is a disorder of the airways that causes airway inflammation and reversible airflow obstruction. This constriction and inflammation can cause cough, chest tightness, shortness-of-breath and/or wheezing. Factors that may trigger episodes of asthma include allergy exposure in allergic individuals, viral infections and miscellaneous factors such as sinusitis, exercise, G.E. reflux disease, certain medicines and smoking.

ASTHMA DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of asthma is based on an in-depth history in which the allergist will review signs and symptoms of asthma, duration of signs and symptoms, triggers, medicines and family history. Pulmonary Function Tests may be performed. These tests assist not only in the diagnosis of asthma, but are of assistance in following the response to medication.

There are four classifications of asthma severity:

  • Mild intermittent

ASTHMA TREATMENT

The best treatment depends on many factors including the patient’s age, allergies, and chronic conditions such as sinusitis, nasal polyps, GERD and smoking. There are also environmental factors and complex genetic factors to be considered.

Management of asthma is based on the control of inflammation of the airways. Asthma medications include as needed medicines to treat symptoms, and in some patients daily medicines to control inflammation.

We will provide you with a complete, individualized Asthma Care Plan.
