Antiviral prescription medicines and an annual flu vaccine are available for treating and preventing the flu.

Prescription anti-flu medicines include amantadine , rimantadine , zanamivir and oseltamivir . These drugs do not cure the flu, but they can make the symptoms milder and make you feel better more quickly. They are only effective when used in the first 48 hours of flu-like symptoms.

These drugs are not needed for healthy people who get the flu. They are usually reserved for people who are very sick with the flu or those who are at risk of complications from the flu, such as people with long-term chronic medical conditions or older age.

Flu vaccine . Although there is currently no vaccine against the common cold, there is a vaccine to prevent the flu. The vaccine is available by both shot and nasal spray. It works by exposing the immune system to the viruses. The body responds by building antibodies against the flu. The flu shot contains dead flu viruses. The nasal spray contains live, but weakened, flu viruses. The nasal spray is only approved for healthy children and adults two to 49 years old and who are not pregnant.

If Your Ear Pain Persists

If your cold has passed but your ear is still hurting, its possible that your earache is caused by an ear infection. Most ear infections are bacterial, not viral. An ear infection occurs when the air-filled pocket behind the eardrum becomes infected and inflamed, thus filling with fluid.

Those experiencing an ear infection will experience a sudden onset of symptoms, including drainage from the ear, dizziness, and trouble hearing, and those who frequently experience ear infections should consult an otitis media specialist in Los Angeles. A Los Angeles ENT for ear infections will be able to give specialized treatment to your ear infection which may include over-the-counter medication or surgery.

Stop using ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine and contact your provider if you have a fever that lasts more than 3 days, nasal congestion that lasts for more than 7 days, or if there is redness or swelling in a painful area. These might be signs of a serious infection or medical condition.

Tell your provider or pharmacist about all the medications youre taking to make sure ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine is safe for you.

Dont take ibuprofen/pseudoephedrine if youre taking or have taken an MAOI, such as selegiline or phenelzine , within the past 2 weeks. Does Not Work As Well As The Otc Advil Cold Medicine

Advil Sinus Congestion & Pain Relief Ibuprofen Coated Tablets

I usually purchase the Advil cold medicine that is sold over the pharmacy counter, however, I bought this by accident. I saw it out in the aisle and thought it was the same thing for some reason. I did not even think to look at the ingredients. I noticed that it did not work near as well for my nasal congestion almost immediately. That is when I looked at the ingredients and realized it was different. Phenylephrine does not work for me as well as pseudo-ephedrine. My nose was still congested and I could barely breathe. I still noticed the symptoms an hour after I took the medication. The good part of this medication is that it is safer for me than the other medication, but if it does not clear out my nose, then what is the point? I only use cold medicine sparingly so if it is bad enough to buy it, I want it to work really well. This medication did help with my sinus headache because of the ibuprofen that is included with the nasal congestion medication. However, I did not purchase this product again after that. It did not work up to my standards, so I do not recommend using it for your cold, if the cold is really bad.
