Blockage In Sinus Cavity Symptoms

Pain Or Pressure In Your Sinuses

Sinusitis

Facial pain is a common symptom of sinusitis. You have several different sinuses above and below your eyes, as well as behind your nose. Any of these air-filled cavities can hurt when you have a sinus infection.

Inflammation and swelling can cause your sinuses to ache with dull pressure. This is because inflammation may alter the typical path of mucus from the nose to the back of the throat.

You may feel pain in:

  • on either side of your nose
  • in your upper jaws and teeth
  • between your eyes

This may lead to a headache. Headaches caused by sinus infections can occur where the sinuses are or in other places.

How Is Sinus Cancer Treated

Treatment for sinus cancer depends on factors like the size and location of the tumor within the sinus, its stage, your overall health, and the type of cancer. Treatment options include:

  • Surgery. The tumor may be removed surgically through a procedure called endoscopic microsurgery. During this procedure, the cancer is removed through your nose with an endoscope.
  • Radiation therapy. Radiation therapy may be used to shrink a tumor before surgery or to kill remaining cells after surgery.
  • Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a chemical drug therapy used to kill cancer cells. It may be used with radiation therapy to treat some types of sinus cancers, such as
Distant 42%

These numbers can give you an estimate of what to expect, but your doctor can give you the most accurate outlook.

Many factors can influence how well you respond to treatment including your age and overall health. Ethnicity and race may also influence outlook.

In a 2021 study , researchers found that compared to white people, Black people, American Indian, and Alaska Natives had higher death rates from sinus cancer. They also found that Hispanics were more likely to be diagnosed with advanced cancer.

Its likely that multiple factors contributed to these differences including socioeconomic status and access to healthcare. Its important to note that the stress of enduring racism, discrimination, and racist systems may play a part in these inequities in healthcare.

How Is Sinusitis Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider will ask you a lot of questions in order to develop a detailed medical history and find out about your symptoms. They will also do a physical examination. During the exam, your care provider will check your ears, nose and throat for any swelling, draining or blockage. An endoscope may be used to look inside the nose. In some cases, you might be referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist. If you needed an imaging exam, your provider would order a computed tomography scan.

Difficulty Breathing And Congestion

The combination of swollen nasal membranes and excess mucus makes it difficult or impossible to breathe through your nose. This blockage can affect one or both sides of the nose. Because of the nasal cycle discussed in Chapter 2, it is not uncommon for nasal obstruction to alternate between sides.

For some sinus sufferers, the term congestion refers not to blocked nasal breathing but to a sense of fullness or blockage of the face, particularly in the cheeks. This sensation is caused by blockage of the sinuses themselves. When ostia swell shut, the mucous membranes in the sinuses absorb oxygen, creating negative pressure , which can produce this sense of facial congestion or even pain.

Treatments For Nasal And Sinus Cancer

Chronic Rhino

The treatment recommended for you will depend on several factors, including the stage at which the cancer was diagnosed, how far it’s spread, and your general level of health.

Treatment may include:

  • surgery to remove a tumour this can be performed through open surgery or as keyhole surgery through the nose
  • radiotherapy where high-energy radiation is used to kill the cancerous cells, shrink a tumour before surgery, or destroy small pieces of a tumour that may be left after surgery
  • chemotherapy where medicine is used to help shrink or slow down the growth of a tumour, or reduce the risk of the cancer returning after surgery

If you smoke, it’s important that you give up.

Smoking increases your risk of cancer returning and may cause you to have more side effects from treatment.

Your treatment will be organised by a head and neck cancer multidisciplinary team , who’ll discuss the treatment options with you.

A combination of treatments will often be recommended.

Corticosteroid Drops Or Sprays

Corticosteroids, also known as steroids, are a group of medications that can help to reduce inflammation.

If you have persistent symptoms of sinusitis, your GP may prescribe steroid nasal drops or sprays to help reduce the swelling in your sinuses. These may need to be used for several months.

Possible side effects include nasal irritation, a sore throat and nosebleeds.

Sore Throat And Hoarse Voice

Postnasal drip can leave you with a raw and aching throat. Although it may start as an annoying tickle, it can get worse.

If your infection lasts for a few weeks or more, mucus can irritate and inflame your throat as it drips, resulting in a painful sore throat and hoarse voice. Frequent coughing and throat clearing can make a hoarse voice worse.

Will I Need To Make Lifestyle Changes To Deal With Sinus Infections

If you have indoor allergies it is recommended that you avoid triggersanimal dander and dust mites, for exampleas well as take medications. Smoking is never recommended, but if you do smoke, strongly consider a program to help you quit. Smoke can also trigger allergies and prevent removal of mucous by the nose. No special diet is required, but drinking extra fluids helps to thin nasal secretions.

When Should I Go See The Doctor About A Sinus Infection

Dr. Qasim Husain: Signs That a Sinus Infection May Be Dangerous

It is pretty easy to care for most sinus conditions on your own. However, if you continue to have symptoms that concern you or if your infections continue to happen, your primary care doctor might suggest you see a specialist. This could also happen if your CT scan shows something that does not look right.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Sinusitis, or swelling of the tissues of the sinus cavities, is a common condition with many causes, including viruses and bacteria, nasal polyps or allergies. Signs and symptoms may including facial pressure, fever and tiredness. You can treat symptoms at home by resting, taking over-the-counter products and increasing your fluid intake. Make sure you contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve, if sinusitis happens often or if you have any symptom that worries you.

What Can Be Done Before Surgery To Reduce Or Eliminate Polyps

The treatment for polyps depends on what is causing them, so it is very important to get a thorough evaluation of the polyps in order to obtain the best treatment. Before surgery, we may want to try:

  • Steroid Sprays Steroid sprays are prescribed for most types of nasal polyps, particularly mild polyps caused by allergic rhinitis . They are also used for patients with medium and large polyps. Steroid sprays are helpful in shrinking polyps or slowing their natural growth.
  • Steroid Pills Steroid pills will cause a dramatic shrinkage of the polyps, but the effect is usually temporary a few days or a few weeks. While the fluid in the polyp is dramatically reduced, the inflammatory cells and tissue remain after stopping the steroids, the water returns to the polyps and they often return to their original size, if nothing else is done.

The Potential Causes Of Nasal Obstruction

The blockage can be caused by a variety of problems, including:

  • Allergies may cause swelling and inflammation that creates a nasal blockage.
  • Sinusitis is caused by a prolonged bacterial infection in the nasal passages, which can cause a blockage in the nasal passage.
  • Adenoid hypertrophy, or enlarged adenoids, is the swelling of the adenoids, which causes an obstruction in the nasal passage.
  • Nasal Polyps are tissue growths in the lining of the nose that can cause a blockage and impede airflow.
  • Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation that occurs in the lining of the nasal cavity commonly associated with allergies. This can create a partial or full obstruction in the nasal passage.
  • Deviated septum occurs when the cartilage and bone in the nose is crooked due to injury or malformation, and creates a partial or full blockage of the nasal airway.

When To See A Healthcare Professional

If you are a smoker, heavy alcohol user, or work with industrial chemicals, you are at higher risk than the normal population of developing sinus cancer. If any symptoms persist for more than three months, you should see a healthcare professional. Also, watch out for these additional warning signs:

  • New symptoms or symptoms that get worse
  • Signs of an infection, such as a fever
  • Losing your sense of taste or smell

A detailed history of symptoms is essential , along with its effect on the patients quality of life.2

Causes Types And Symptoms

Sinusitis can come on suddenly and subside quickly, or it can develop more gradually and linger for many weeks. No matter what type of sinusitis you might have, a visit to an ENT for a proper diagnosis and treatment is the first step to finding relief from this often-painful condition.

Causes of Blocked SinusesThere are a variety of reasons why the sinuses might become blocked:

Colds & Other Infections A cold may cause your sinus and nasal lining to swell, causing sinus openings to become blocked so that mucus backs up. This becomes the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, leading to an infection.

Allergic Reactions Sensitivity to some substances can lead to the release of histamine, which makes your sinus and nasal linings swell and in turn clogs your sinuses and prevents cilia from sweeping away mucus.

Polyps These growths inside the sinuses consist of a sac of swollen tissue. A polyp may block the middle meatus, where most of your sinuses drain. The blockage can lead to pain, inflammation, and infection.

Deviated Septum This occurs when the central partition inside your nose, known as the septum, isnt centered. The deviation may block the middle meatus, affecting the ability of the sinuses to drain properly and can be caused by genetic factors or external trauma.

Are You at Risk for Sinusitis? Some people are at higher risk for sinusitis than others. Risk factors for the condition include:

Chronic sinusitis might be characterized by the following symptoms:

How Is Nasal Obstruction Diagnosed

Nasal obstruction can be diagnosed by a skilled ear, nose and throat doctor at New York ENT through an evaluation of the patients related nasal symptoms, severity and duration. Our doctors will use a physical examination along with a detailed patient history evaluation to make an accurate diagnosis. Some tools that your ENT doctor may use to help evaluate your condition include:

  • Rhinoscopy is used to look at the inside of the nose with an otoscope, which is a light and magnifying tool held up to the outside of the nostril.
  • Endoscopy is used to get a more detailed look of the inside of the nasal passages than a rhinoscopy can gather.
  • Allergy testing is a skin test used to check a patient for negative autoimmune reactions after being exposed to certain substances. If allergies are the underlying cause of the nasal obstruction, they can be treated and the blockage should subside.

Why Diagnosis Is Important

Blocked Sinuses: Causes and Treatment

Because patients cant breathe through their nose, they mouth breathe while sleeping, causing them to snore. Sometimes nasal polyps can make snoring severe enough to tip a patient who snores over to sleep apnea which has a substantial effect on patients.

Patients with sleep apnea dont sleep well, and they are at higher risk for other health problems, including heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and memory and concentration problems.

When To Contact A Medical Professional

  • Your symptoms last longer than 10 to 14 days or you have a cold that gets worse after 7 days.
  • You have a severe headache that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medicine.
  • You have a fever.
  • You still have symptoms after taking all of your antibiotics properly.
  • You have any changes in your vision during a sinus infection.

A green or yellow discharge does not mean that you definitely have a sinus infection or need antibiotics.

Types Of Sinus Infections: Chronic Vs Acute

There are four types of sinus infections. These classifications depend on the length and frequency of the infection:

  • Acute sinusitis. This type of sinus infection lasts only for a short time, defined by the American Academy of Otolaryngology as less than 4 weeks. This short-term infection is usually part of a cold or other respiratory illness. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection .
  • Subacute sinusitis. A subacute sinus infection lasts between 4 and 12 weeks .
  • Recurrent acute sinusitis. An acute sinus infection is considered recurrent if the infection returns four or more times within a year, with each infection lasting 7 days or more.
  • Chronic sinusitis.Chronic sinus infections last for more than 12 weeks or continue to recur.

Many sinus infection symptoms are common in both acute and chronic forms. Seeing a doctor is the best way to learn if you have an infection, find the cause, and get treatment.

For cases of acute bacterial sinus infections, these symptoms last at least 10 days without improving, or they worsen within 10 days after seeming to improve. In this case, its important to talk with a doctor, such as a general practitioner or an ear, nose, and throat doctor , to get a diagnosis and treatment plan.

What Issues Affect The Sinuses

Many things can lead to inflammation and swelling of the sinuses. Causes include nasal polyps, allergies, facial trauma, respiratory tract infections, infection, nasal polyps a deviated septum and other issues.

Acute sinusitis refers to sinusitis that lasts less than a couple of months. If swelling persists it is referred to as chronic sinusitis, which can interfere with drainage, cause an accumulation of mucus and make it hard to breathe through the nose. Chronic sinusitis can also lead to swelling near the eyes and other parts of the face, as well as a headache and/or throbbing pain.

Medications And Specialist Treatment

Blocked Nose

Over-the-counter pain medications can help relieve the pain of a headache or pressure from swelling. These include ibuprofen or acetaminophen . Nasal sprays with corticosteroids also help with inflammation. OTC sprays include fluticasone and mometasone . Nasal sprays can also help make nasal polyps get smaller. This will help you breathe better if theyâre blocking your nasal passages.

If your sinusitis is caused by an infection, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection and relieve some of your symptoms. Chronic sinusitis isnât often caused by an infection, but serious infections that result in sinusitis may require antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.

If your chronic sinusitis is caused by allergies, your doctor may refer you to an allergist. An allergist can conduct tests to figure out what youâre allergic to. They can then give you regular allergy shots to gradually allow your body to become immune to those allergens. Allergy shots may not take effect until several years after beginning the treatment, but they can help relieve allergy symptoms drastically in the long term.
