Eucalyptus oil has a strong odor that often helps patients find instant relief from sinusitis. Research has found that cineole, the main ingredient in eucalyptus oil, helps people recover from sinus infections more quickly than those who dont use eucalyptus oil. You can inhale eucalyptus oil through a diffuser, or rub some on your temples and chest to open your breathing passages. You can even use food-grade eucalyptus oil and place a drop on the roof of your mouth.

Oral Absorption And Bioavailability Of Bromelain

One of the key features of bromelain is its ability to be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract without much hindrance or degradation. About 12 g/day of bromelain can be absorbed safely with no side effects. When given orally about 40% of the high molecular-weight ingredients successfully reach the blood stream .

According to the findings of Castell et al. , bromelain does not lose its proteolytic activity in plasma. When checked, the bromelain in rabbits was found to be active even in the presence of the two native antiproteolytic glycoproteins of the blood, α-antichymotrypsin and α-macroglobulin. Most of the research conducted on bromelainâs biological effects is done through in vitro assays which do not require bromelain to pass through the pharmacokinetic stages for reaching its target, but rather allows it to make direct contact with its target. However, when the results of these studies were compared with in vivo data, differences were noted, the possible reason for these being that in the in vivo assays bromelain cannot successfully reach its target since it is found in combination with many other ingredients. Another possible reason for the reduction in the physiological activity of bromelain is that it may lose potency during the extraction process, or storage, since proteolytic enzymes are not temperature stable .

Inhale Menthol And Camphor

Another inhaled odor that can help open up sinus passages is menthol, which is an ingredient in popular ointments that are used specifically to treat a stuffy nose. These ointments also contain eucalyptus oil and camphor, which combine with menthol to create a powerful scent that immediately relieves sinus pressure. This ointment can be rubbed on your chest and under your nose to deliver its soothing benefits. Unlike eucalyptus oil, this ointment should not be placed in the mouth.

Include Horseradish In Your Diet

Horseradish is an integral part of folk medicine and is native to Russia and Hungary. It is quite popular in a condiment and also has a much longer history as a medicine.

Herbalists use horseradish roots and leaves for centuries to treat sinusitis, asthma, arthritis, and cancer.

Moreover, horseradish contains compounds such as glucosinolates and isothiocyanates.

These compounds help to fight against bacterial and fungal infections and also improve any breathing problems.

It stimulates mucus drainage and eases sinus pressure. Also, it reduces the inflammation of frontal sinuses and helps in the opening of blocked sinuses.

In a recent study, it is effective in reducing the symptoms of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis in children and the adult population.

However, when you eat, it has a tingling sensation in your nasal area and reduces mucus secretion.

For those who are prone to sinusitis, winter can be a very difficult time. Here are the Dos and don ts to prevent sinus infections. Instead of staying indoors and dealing with the symptoms of sinusitis, here’s a natural remedy you should try — eat fresh pineapples. The fruit contains an enzyme called bromelain which has traditionally been used as a medicinal plant in many native cultures. While bromelain was known chemically since 1867, it was introduced as a therapeutic compound only in 1957 when it was found in high concentrations in pineapple stems.

A study conducted by German researchers found that bromelain is effective in accelerating recovery by significantly reducing symptoms among children suffering from chronic sinusitis . Around 116 sinusitis patients from 19 centres across Germany were a part of the study and all of them were treated using this enzyme found in fresh pineapples. Doctors observed that the recovery was seen only 9 days after the children, who were under 11 years old, were given bromelain for their treatment.

Purification Of Bromelain From Pineapple Waste

Bromelain is a group of proteolytic enzymes that can be found in the leaves and bark of pineapple . These enzymes have antiinflammatory, antithrombotic, and fibrinolytic properties . Bromelain has been recovered from ground pineapple stem using ethanol precipitation at low temperature either in a batch-mode reactor or in two fed-batch pilot tanks, a glass, and a stainless-steel one . When concentration of ethanol varies from 30% to 70%, a purification factor of 2.28 could be achieved. This fact leads to the recovery of 98% of the total enzymatic activity. The effect of temperature on the extraction process has also been reported. Temperature plays a crucial role on enzyme activity similar to fermentation procedures . For instance, Martins et al. carried out ethanol precipitation of bromeline from pineapple stem, bark, and leaves under cold condition . Bromelain has been precipitated successfully using the above ethanolic concentration range, with a purification factor of 2.34-fold and > 98% of recovery of enzyme activity. Besides, bromelain did not precipitate when ethanol concentration was below 30%. An increase of ethanol concentrations over 65% also resulted in increase in enzymatic activity .

Risks And Side Effects

Bromelain is usually well-tolerated and unlikely to cause side effects. However, there are some instances when its unsafe to take this enzyme. Because it helps prevent blood clots, its important to be especially careful when consuming extra pineapple or bromelain supplements if youre any taking blood-thinning medications. The same applies to surgery: Avoid taking it immediately following surgery unless you speak with your doctor first, as this can increase risk for bleeding.

Side effects that have been associated with this enzyme usually include gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, change in feces and increased gas. Bomelain allergy symptoms are possible and can include itchy mouth or skin, developing a rash, trouble breathing, nasal congestion, and watery eyes.

Cold Busting Pineapple Smoothie

Packed full of goodness with tropical flavours mixed in. This cold busting pineapple smoothie will help send cold germs packing.

Waaaahey, its a brand new year. Yesterday I spent the last day of the school holidays at home, snuggled up with my girls, which was lovely, despite us all missing our Christmas tree and having to resign the leftover chocolates to the cupboard until the weekend.

Being honest, I was craving sweet stuff all day, which as we all know, is what happens when you go cold turkey. Um…. no reference to Christmas dinner intended there at all.

Instead of caving into my cravings, Ive promised myself a week full of healthy foodie delights such as this delicious and nourishing cold buster of a smoothie. It’s packed full of naturally tasty ingredients to get my nutrition intake somewhere back to normal.

If ever there was a smoothie I wanted to shout about during January, this is it. January is my least favourite month – grey, foggy, chilled to the bone cold and also distinctly lacking in fairy lights. I think you get the picture.

This healthy drink is like a glass of sunshine with tropical warmth thrown in to cheer you up.

And though it’s undeniably tasty to slurp, because this smoothie has so many ingredients that help to fight off, and cure, wintery cold ailments, it’s one health drink that I’m on board with consuming.

How I Found A Natural Sinus Cure

Amazon Consultant – Entrepreneur – Writer – Filmmaker

March is usually a time when we feel that we are in the clear from the winter sniffles. However, a wave of recent antibiotic-resistant infections has many of us wondering if relief will ever come.

According to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, sinusitis, i.e. sinus inflammation, post-nasal drip, nasal congestion, mucous cough, headache and facial pain, is one of the most, if not the most, common medical complaints in the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , in the U.S. alone there are an estimated 12.5 million doctor and hospital visits from the nearly 30 million Americans that suffer from sinusitis. This amounts to over $6 billion a year in doctor’s visits alone.

A couple months ago I got the all-too-common flu that was going around. Although these things usually only affect me for a couple of days, this one stretched out for over a week. When I finally recovered, I noticed that I had intermittent sinus pressure and post-nasal drip. What was even worse were a nearly debilitating pressure and headache that just wouldn’t go away.

After a month of this I had enough. I decided to visit my doctor who took one look and immediately prescribed two different nasal spray medications. The first medication was a powerful steroidal and anti-inflammatory. The second was a semi-toxic antihistamine.

    How Does It Work

Remedy for Sore Throat, Cough, Sinus | Dr. Mandell

Besides all the nutrients found in pineapples, drinking the juice helps to soothe a sore throat by expelling mucus. Thick and stubborn mucus in your lungs or sinuses can cause awful coughing fits, sneezing, and painful infections.

In a study published in Der Pharma Chemica in 2010, researchers attempted to find beneficial treatments for patients who have tuberculosis, an infectious disease often caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. As part of their studies, they discovered that a mixture of raw pineapple juice, pepper, salt, and honey, given to patients every day, helped to dissolve the mucus in the lungs thus ridding them of their awful sore throat!

Making your own pineapple juice is much better than anything you can buy at a store. Store bought juice has all kinds of unhealthy additives like extra sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Look for the kind with no added sugar, or simply squeeze your own juice right from a fresh pineapple. Heres a recipe to really kick it to your cough!

Surgery Sprains And Strains And Tendinitis

Although studies show mixed results, bromelain may reduce swelling, bruising, healing time, and pain after surgery and physical injuries. It is often used to reduce inflammation from tendinitis, sprains and strains, and other minor muscle injuries. Studies of people having dental, nasal, and foot surgeries found it reduced inflammation. In Europe, bromelain is used to treat sinus and nasal swelling following ear, nose, and throat surgery or trauma.

Why Is Hydration Important When You Have Sinusitis

Keeping hydrated is important for your overall health and should not be taken lightly. In fact, the body is mostly composed by water.

Dehydration is associated with a number of mild and serious conditions. These include:

  • Disc problems. The discs of the spine contain water. When you have dehydration, your discs can shrink and press on the sciatic nerve, leading to back pain arising from your spine. In severe case, chronic dehydration may lead to herniated and bulging discs.
  • Headache, heaviness in the head, dizziness, or blurred vision because the blood doesnt effectively circulate to the brain.
  • Heat injury. Dehydration may cause heat injury from mild to serious . The risk of heat injury increases when youre exercising vigorously and you dont drink enough water.
  • Kidney disease. Keeping hydrated can help make your kidneys work more easily. Chronic dehydration is linked to increased risk of kidney disease, such as kidney failure.
  • Severe dehydration may contribute to cause cerebral edema , seizures, coma, or even death.
  • You also need plenty of fluid to help keep the nasal cavities moist and lubricate your mucus membranes. In other words, good hydration is important to keep your mucus thin and loose this is particularly important when you have sinus problem such as sinus infection.
