ContacÃî Cold + Flu advises patients suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure and/or diabetes to consult with their doctor before using Contac. For most people, this increase isnât significant. However, some people can have exaggerated responses to decongestants, contributing to dangerously high blood pressures. As stated on the label, check with your doctor before using Contac Cold + Flu if you have liver disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland , or a breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Other Ways People With High Blood Pressure Can Treat A Cold:

Colds are notoriously difficult to cure, but many natural approaches can alleviate symptoms. Most of these are also safe for people with high blood pressure. Vitamin C, for example, wont prevent colds but it does seem to help people get over them faster.

Elderberry is another remedy that is increasingly popular to treat colds. Some people use the juice or make a syrup. Others collect the flowers and dry them to make a pleasant tea to treat a cough.

You may also have heard that zinc supplements can speed recovery from a cold. Scientific studies support that claim, although we dont yet know the correct dose. Any of these remedies work best when taken at the earliest appearance of symptoms, and none of them pose a special hazard for people with high blood pressure.

Things To Consider When Buying An Ear Decongestant

It can be hard to find the best decongestant for ears because some viable options dont readily state that purpose on their packaging. Because of this, its important that you learn what makes a good ear decongestant to help you pinpoint which products you can use even if they dont necessarily explicitly state it on their labels.

Here are some things you should keep in mind when buying ear decongestants to get the best value for your money and the best relief for your ears.

  • All Around Decongestants. The reason why you tend to feel increased pressure in your ears when you have a cold is because of the Eustachian tube. This small canal connects your nasal cavities and throat to your middle ear. The purpose of this tube is to normalize the pressure in your ear so that its equal to the pressure outside of the body.

When you have an overproduction of mucus, this tube can easily become clogged as well because of its connections to the throat and nasal cavities. That said, if you resolve the congestion in your nose and throat, you can indirectly address the discomfort in your ears as well.

For that reason, many of the decongestant medications available on the market can also easily resolve ear congestion. While this isnt explicitly stated on many of their labels, they do perform this function as a positive outcome of their original purpose.

These products come in many different forms, but the most common include:

Major Pharmaceuticals Sudogest Pe Generic

Top #10 Best Sinus Otc Decongestant in 2021

Formulated to temporarily relieve sinus congestion and pressure, Major Sudogest PE Nasal Decongestant is a non-drowsy medication that promises to clear out your sinus and ears just minutes after a dosage. The medication contains phenylephrine HCl which is one of the most popular decongestant ingredients available as an over the counter purchase.

The reason why this product has made it as the second best is because its reliable when it comes to flushing out as much mucus as possible. This makes it a great option if youre experiencing severe congestion of the nose and ears.

Effects of the medication last for only 4-6 hours, so you might need to take another dosage later on to sustain the relief. Regardless, its a reliable solution that you can depend on to get rid of that stuffy feeling when it starts to creep in.

Interactions With Thyroid Medications

Hypothyroidism is managed with a synthetic form of thyroxine called levothyroxine, available under the brand names Synthroid or Levothroid.

People may be at increased risk of cardiovascular side effects if they take pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine and levothyroxine. This could be especially dangerous for someone who has preexisting heart disease.

Regardless of the type of thyroid disorder you have, whether you take medication to treat it, or happen to have a heart condition as well, itâs best to err on the side of caution before taking a decongestant for a cold or flu and speak with your healthcare provider.

How To Get Rid Of A Stuffy Nose Fast According To Doctors

These remedies will have you breathing easy in no time.

Dealing with a stuffy nose isnt exactly funespecially if it leaves you struggling to sleep or constantly reaching for a tissue. And although its much more common during the colder months, sinus congestion is an all-year problem, thanks to colds, allergies, weather, and COVID-19. Is there any foolproof way to get rid of a stuffy nose?

Regardless of the season, allergens, bacteria, and viruses can inflame the blood vessels in the nose, leaving the nasal passages swollen and obstructed, explains Judy Tung, M.D., an internist at NewYork-Presbyterian. Plenty of over-the-counter medications and natural remedies can help you breathe freely again, she saysand choosing the right fix all depends on your symptoms.

If mucus is dripping like a sink that wont stop running, you should reach for a solution that will turn down that faucet, Dr. Tung recommends. But if your sinuses are at a standstill and the mucus in your nose wont budge, you require something with the power to clear your nasal passageways like a clogged drain.

Always remove or alleviate the trigger of your stuffiness, explains Purvi Parikh, M.D., an allergist with NYU Langone Health and a spokesperson for Allergy & Asthma Networkand see a doctor if your sinuses just wont unclog. You could require antibiotics for a bacterial infection, for example, she says.

Dry Air Drying You Out Just Add Water

Another potential remedy for a stuffy nose is salt water, which eases congestion by moistening and clearing the nasal passages. Dry air can increase mucus production and thicken the mucus so that it accumulates in the sinuses, explains Auth. Other irritants that buildup in nasal passages can also lead to nasal inflammation if they arent flushed out.

The nose loves salt water, says Seidman. A home remedy I tell people about is to mix 1 quart of sterilized water, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, and ¼ teaspoon , and then run it up your nose.

Neti pots are nasal rinsing devices that have been around for thousands of years. While theyâre generally considered safe, the FDA cautions that they must be used and cleaned properly to avoid the risk of infection. The FDA recommends using purchased distilled or sterile water, boiled and cooled tap water, or water passed through one of its recommended filters in any of these devices to reduce the risk of infection.

Engle says saline nasal sprays are a convenient option to moisten and help drain a stuffy nose because the contents are premixed and sterile, which reduces the potential for infection if used properly. For people squeamish about rinsing out their nose, experts say simply moistening the air around you can help.

A humidifier is a good thing for young children and people who dont want to use drugs, says Engle. Cool mist humidifiers are recommended in childrens bedrooms to reduce the risk of burns from warm mist versions.

Neti Pot Beats Steam For Sinus Congestion Relief

Rinsing nasal passages with saline solution may improve symptoms, study says

HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, July 18, 2016 â Inhaling steam probably wonât open your chronically clogged sinuses. But nasal irrigation may bring some relief, a new study finds.

âPeople with chronic and recurrent sinusitis have poor quality of life, similar to having a major chronic disease,â said lead study author Dr. Paul Little, professor of primary care research at the University of Southampton in England.

âIt is very nice to be able to provide something really simple that empowers people to manage this problem, helps them with their symptoms, reduces the need to take over-the-counter medications, and makes them less likely to want to see the doctor in future attacks,â he said.

More than 29 million American adults were diagnosed with sinusitis in 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the nasal cavities often caused by a virus, allergy, bacteria, fungus, or possibly an autoimmune reaction.

For those with chronic sinusitis, doctors often recommend steam inhalation or nasal irrigationâ rinsing the sinuses with a saline solution.

The steam treatment group was asked to inhale steam for five minutes every day. They were directed to place a towel over their head and stand over a bowl of recently boiled water.

The results arenât surprising, one doctor said.

The study was published July 18 in CMAJ.

Where Are The Sinuses Located

The sinuses are named according to their location in the skull bones:

  • The frontal sinuses are located over the forehead, above the eyes on both sides.
  • The maxillary sinuses are located over the cheek area, in the bone known as the maxilla, located under the eyes on both sides of the face.
  • The ethmoid sinuses are located in the bone that divides the eyes and nose.
  • The sphenoid sinuses are located in the sphenoid bone at the center of the skull, behind the eyes.

The sinuses are lined by mucous membranes that secrete fluid and are connected to the nasal cavity by small channels or ducts. The sinuses are sometimes collectively referred to as the paranasal sinuses because of their proximity to the nose.

Inflammation due to any cause can cause a buildup of fluid and increased sinus pressure, causing the typical symptoms of a sinus headache.
