The Link Between Covid And Hives

There is much that is still unknown about COVID-19 and its symptoms. While many people experience the typical symptoms of cough, fatigue, and loss of taste or smell, there are other symptoms that appear in some COVID patients. Physicians are beginning to see urticaria, also known as hives, and other rashes in COVID patients. In many cases, hives present themselves as the first symptom. Urticaria is associated with a relatively mild form of the disease. They may look like any of the following:

  • Round, pinpoint spots on the skin
  • Large patch with several smaller ones
  • A lace-like pattern on the skin
  • Flat spots and raised bumps that join together

These hives may itch and be in one or multiple spots on the body. Reports suggest that the rash typically lasts between two and twelve days, with most people having it for about a week.

In a recent case published in BMJ Journals, a 54-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19 and experienced shortness of breath for one day along with generalized weakness and a rash associated with itching and a burning sensation that progressively worsened for threedays prior to entering the emergency room. Her hives appeared on many parts of her body. After treatment, the hives resolved within 48 hours.

In The Heart Of Medical Mile

Midtown East is home to a cluster of nationally renowned hospitals, medical centers, doctors offices, and outpatient facilities, collectively known as the NYU Langone Medical Center.

This expanding network of NYU affiliated institutions represents one of the densest health care clusters in Manhattan and drives significant demand for medical office uses requiring close proximity to the medical campus.

The property is surrounded by an extremely dense and affluent neighborhood which is expected to grow as 5,000 newly developed apartments come available.

The property is within walking distance of Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station, and is next to the Midtown Tunnel.

What Treatments Are Available For Hives

Treatment begins with a complete health history and review of your symptoms, including asking about the activities you were performing just before the hives appeared. In most cases, hives can be successfully treated with antihistamine medications to help control the bodys immune reactions. Cool compresses can help reduce itching and burning sensations. If antihistamines do not bring relief, corticosteroid medications may be prescribed, either on their own or in addition to antihistamines. Epinephrine injections may be used if the hives impede breathing. If hives occur chronically or occur in the mouth or throat and the cause cannot be determined from your health history, allergy testing may be ordered to determine the trigger.

A personal and family medical history including your current symptoms is an important part of the diagnosis, and in some cases, skin testing may also be used to identify allergens. Skin testing involves applying an array of allergens to the skin surface or just beneath the surface of the skin, then evaluating the reactions after a brief period of time has passed.

Diagnosing And Treating Hives

As with any medical condition, you should not try to diagnose yourself. Hives may be a symptom of COVID-19 or a number of other things. If you do experience hives randomly, you can get tested for COVID. In cases that yield a positive result, you should seek medical attention for treatment. These hives may be treated with oral antihistamines and topical steroids. Ask your doctor for the best treatment for your COVID-related hives.

If a negative result returns, your hives could be caused by allergies. Many allergens cause hives, so its important to get an allergy test for a quick diagnosis. At NY Allergy & Sinus Centers, we can diagnose your hives in minutes. We then provide a personalized treatment plan to care for your allergies. Ask about our allergy shots that treat the root of your problem, not just the symptoms.

How Is A Chronic Cough Diagnosed

A chronic cough can have many underlying causes, which makes diagnosis a critical part of treatment. Diagnosing the cause of a chronic cough relies on a physical exam and personal history, a review of lifestyle habits, imaging tests like x-ray or CT scan, lung function tests or blood work. A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope may also be used to look inside the airways for possible causes.

How Is A Chronic Cough Treated

Balloon Sinuplasty Testimonial 2 | Orange County NY | New York Center For Sinus Relief

Treatments for a chronic cough are based on the underlying cause and can include:

  • acid blockers to treat GERD

  • cough suppressants

  • antibiotics to treat infections

Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking and avoiding allergens can also help. If you have a chronic cough, getting treatment as soon as possible is important for avoiding serious side effects and maintaining optimal health and wellness.

Desensitization And Oit Success Happens Here Every Day

Desensitization means that a person can consume a significant amount of a problem food without experiencing a reaction, the majority of our patients achieve this in just 6 months, yes, 6 months!

The elation of the families who experience this describe it as life changing, and an amazing relief. We take tremendous joy and pride in having helped change and improve the lives of so many!

In order to stay safe, patients continue eating these foods until tolerance is developed. The desensitization or tolerance has helped large numbers of people with food allergies, protecting them against potentially fatal reactions. During OIT, the food is administered slowly, in small but steadily increasing doses, until the patient is desensitized to it. Clinical trials have demonstrated 80-95% success rate, if done properly and administered in a controlled setting.

We have a dedicated experienced team, resources, and controlled settings to help families with food allergies who plan to join our growing number of OIT patients. We are here for you and with you for the duration.

What Treatments Are Available For Sinusitis

Sinusitis can often be treated successfully with antibiotics to clear up a persistent infection, as well as nasal sprays to help keep sinus passage clear of mucus. When medication doesnt work, surgery may be necessary to unblock the sinuses or nasal passages and allow mucus to drain properly. Its generally a good idea to avoid over-the-counter nasal sprays which, when overused, can actually make congestion much worse.

How Is Asthma Treated

While there is no cure for asthma, there are medications that can improve symptoms. Asthma medicines are inhaled, either with a portable handheld device called an inhaler or through a device called a nebulizer. Understanding what triggers your symptoms for instance, extreme temperatures, physical exertion or exposure to molds and mildews and then avoiding those triggers whenever possible can also help relieve symptoms. Its also important to remain physically active.
