Some of these conditions include:

  • Thyroid disease, a condition that impacts how much hormone this gland makes
  • Peptic ulcer, or a sore on the lining of the stomach or small intestine
  • Heart disease, or different conditions that impact the heart

Cautions With Other Medicines

Check with a pharmacist or doctor if you’re taking:

  • antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors
  • digoxin, a medicine for heart failure
  • tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline
  • ergot alkaloids, such as ergotamine

Pseudoephedrine is sometimes mixed with painkillers, such as cough and cold remedies.

Before taking any other medicines, check the label to see if they contain aspirin, paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Ask a pharmacist if you’re not sure.

Is Warm Or Cool Mist Humidifier Better For Sinuses

How can you know if you need a humidifier? The first thing is to measure the humidity levels in the house. The ideal measurements oscillate between 40 and 60% according to some, and between 35 and 55% according to others. Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity percentage in your environment and see for sure if the air is too dry. If this measurement registers levels lower than 35% it is time to take action. Buying a humidifier can prove to be a long run success. Humidifiers are simple and inexpensive devices that can provide numerous advantages. Health is something too valuable to be put at risk! A humidifier is always a good investment when health is concerned, especially when there are also babies or toddlers in the household.

There is also quite a dilemma ongoing whether a warm or cool mist humidifier is better for soothing sinuses.

Help Relieve Your Child’s Sinus Infection

When your childs cold has lasted the better part of two weeks and doesnt seem to be getting any better, he may have a sinus infection. Because sinuses arent yet fully developed in young children, sinusitis symptoms are much like those of the common cold: a runny nose, post-nasal drip, a low-grade fever, irritability and fatigue, the occasional daytime cough, a frequent nighttime cough and swelling around the eyes. Your pediatrician can tell you whether your childs sinus infection is bacterial, which calls for antibiotics, or viral, which does not. In the meantime, here are a few way to help relieve your child’s symptoms.

Adding some humidity to dry air is an easy way to give your child major relief. Because breathing dry air irritates the nasal passage, increasing inflammation and sinus pressure, running a humidifier or vaporizer can ease her symptoms with every breath. Breathing moist air helps calm inflammation and thin mucus, allowing it to drain more easily. Use a cool-mist humidifier for younger children to avoid the potential of scalds or burns that can happen with a warm-mist humidifier. If you dont have a humidifier, try sitting with your child in the bathroom for several minutes while running a hot shower. Breathing steamy air like this two to four times a day can help relieve congestion.

When To Call A Doctor

Most colds clear up on their own in less than two weeks. In some cases, though, your child may develop symptoms that will need to be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

If your child has a fever that’s over 102 degrees, call your pediatrician. Other symptoms that require the evaluation of a healthcare provider include:

  • Fast breathing or breathing that seems labored
  • A cough that does not go away or seems severe
  • Excessive fussiness

How Is Sinusitis Diagnosed

How to relieve sinus pain and sinus pressure with self massage

Generally, your child’s health care provider can diagnose sinusitis based on your child’s symptoms and physical examination. In some cases additional tests may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. These may include:

  • Sinus X-rays. Diagnostic test which uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs onto film.

  • Computed tomography . A diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce horizontal, or axial, images of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general X-rays.

Your doctor may perform this procedure:

  • If treatment for sinusitis has been effective
  • If surgery is needed
  • If your child has experienced any complications due to sinusitis
  • Cultures from the sinuses. Laboratory tests that involve the growing of bacteria or other microorganisms to aid in diagnosis.

    What Causes Pediatric Sinusitis

Young children are more prone to infections of the nose, sinus, and ears, especially in the first several years of life. Viruses, allergies, or bacteria usually cause sinusitis. Acute viral sinusitis is likely if your child has been sick for less than 10 days and is not getting worse. Acute bacterial sinusitis is likely when the sinusitis symptoms do not improve at all within 10 days of getting sick, or if your child gets worse within 10 days after beginning to get better.

Chronic sinusitis lasts 12 weeks or longer, and is usually caused by prolonged inflammation, instead of a long infection. Infection can be a part of chronic sinusitis, especially when it worsens from time to time, but is not usually the main cause.

    Treatment For Sinus Problems

There are multiple treatment options available to address sinus issues and sinusitis. These include over-the-counter medication or, in the case of bacterial sinusitis, antibiotics, which can be prescribed by an ear, nose, and throat doctor. Additionally, you may be advised to use a nasal irrigation tool such as a neti pot to flush excess mucus and potential irritants from your nose.

If you have recurring sinus problems and have been diagnosed with a structural issue or polyps, surgery may be recommended. The good news is, todays sinus surgeries are less invasive than in the past, and often result in less pain in recovery and better surgery outcomes.

Some other potential causes of congestion include:

    • Allergies: Allergies may also cause itchy, watery eyes, and do not usually cause a fever.
    • Flu: The flu causes cold-like symptoms, though the symptoms tend to be more severe, and a child may be very sick for many days.
    • Bacterial infections: A bacterial sinus infection can cause congestion this could happen after a cold.
    • Structural abnormalities: Sometimes, a child has a problem with the structure of their respiratory system. They might have a deviated septum or enlarged adenoids. Children who always seem congested should see a doctor.

Sinus Pain In Children What Causes It

    Feb 22, 2018 | News

Runny noses are commonplace among small children. In fact, sometimes, it seems to be the norm. But then, on occasion, things progress from there. The nasal discharge increases to the point where you feel like you are continually wiping the kids nose, even attempting to get the tyke to blow. The discharge can become cloudy, green or yellow.

This is not just a runny nose. The discharge is coming from infected sinuses draining into the childs nasal passages. Possibly some of it bypasses the nose and drains down the back of the throat. The toddler might be able to describe it, but there might be a tickle or an itch in the throat. You will know it, though, because this post nasal drip causes the youngster to cough at night and into the morning after getting up. It can cause hoarseness and, eventually, a sore throat.

The pain might not be from a sore throat. We all have several different sinuses above and below our eyes as well as behind our nose. Any of these can experience inflammation and swelling. The child may feel pain in his or her forehead, on either side of the nose, in the upper jaws and teeth, or between the eyes, leading to a general headache.

Medically known as rhinosinusitis, a sinus infection occurs when your nasal cavities become infected, swollen, and inflamed. Sinusitis, in and of itself, is not spread by contagion.

    Acetaminophen Use In Children

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol that is used to relieve fever and pain in infants and children.

Acetaminophen can also be found in some OTC cold medicines for children, a fact that many parents are not aware of. In some cases, a parent may inadvertently overdose their child by giving them a Children’s Tylenol along with a dose of an acetaminophen-containing child’s cold medicine, such as:

    • Children’s Mucinex Multi-Symptom Cold & Fever Liquid
    • PediaCare Children Cough and Runny Nose Plus Acetaminophen
    • PediaCare Children Flu Plus Acetaminophen

The same concerns apply when using an acetaminophen-containing cold medicine formulated for adults and children, such as:

    • Robitussin Severe Multi-Symptom Cough-Cold + Flu Nighttime
    • Theraflu Day & Nighttime Severe Cold & Cough Relief Tea Packets
    • Triaminic Cough & Sore Throat
    • Triaminic Multi-Symptom Fever

An overdose of acetaminophen can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, profuse sweating, and stomach pain or cramps.
