Sleep Apnea Treatment San Antonio Tx

Pasha Snoring and Sinus Center Patient Stories: Jerry

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition takes a heavy toll on health, well-being, and quality of life. The good news is that OSA usually treatable. Our sleep apnea surgery success rate is very high, and our patients are delighted by the significant improvements they experience after treatment. Link video of obstructive sleep apnea here

Options for sleep apnea surgery include:

A contemporary two-phase surgical approach for OSAS treatment has been developed to limit over operating and to decrease risks of surgery. It is important to note that if this phased protocol is used the patient and referring physician must understand that both phases may be necessary. The protocol was not intended to be a single phase protocol. A polysomnogram is necessary after phase one . If the patient is controlled no further treatment is needed. If incompletely treated then phase two is appropriate.

The first phase is the most conservative approach and addresses palatal and tongue base obstruction without movement of the jaw or teeth. An Inspire hypoglossal stimulator may be considered for treatment of airway obstruction. It should be emphasized that improved surgical success is dependent upon optimizing the soft-tissue. Maxillomandibular advancement and Distraction Osteogenesis with Maxillary Expansion are performed to improve severe obstructive sleep apnea as well as expand the nasal airway.

Air Force Career & Medical Aspirations

Dr. Barrera’s stud academic and athletic status led to his recruitment and nomination by his two senators, propelling him through the Air Force Academy in 1989, where he attended the Academy’s Preparatory School before going to the school “up on the hill.” He majored in biochemistry and graduated with military distinction, which allowed him to receive a coveted health professions scholarship to go to medical school.

During his tenure in medical school at the University of Colorado, Dr. Barrera fell in love with the anatomy of the head and neck and found a desire to be an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. He began research in genomics and head and neck cancer in a lab for the last two years of medical school, where he published papers that caught the attention of the Chairman, Dr. Bruce Jafek. His excellence led to a residency where only three applicants out of 50 were accepted.

Dr. Barrera has excelled in both his medical aspirations and military operations throughout his career. After completing his residency, the Air Force sent him to Tokyo to practice at the Yokota Air Base. Dr. Barrera highlighted that this significant move was made possible by the love and support of his wife, Dena, who was caring for a young child with another one on the way. For the first three years of his career, Dr. Barrera was in charge of all head, neck, and ENT surgery for the airbase and the entire mainland of Japan.

Don’t worry he got to fly some planes while he was there.

    Sleep Apnea: The Silent Killer

Sleep apnea occurs when tissues in the back of the throat collapse during sleep, causing an obstruction in the airway. This leads to pauses in breathing and reduced oxygen levels in the bloodstream. Individuals with sleep apnea in Las Vegas usually exhibit chronic loud snoring and may awake suddenly with a gasp or choke. This can occur repeatedly throughout the night as often as several hundred times in some cases and the consequences are steep. Patients suffer from daytime fatigue concentration difficulties memory lapses stress and irritability. They may experience a low sex drive and have a higher risk of being involved in an automobile accident. Threats to their physical health include cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. Personal relationships and job performance are often affected. Sleep apnea is a global health concern that affects around one billion people worldwide.

    Symptoms include:

An Alternative Treatment For Sleep Apnea

The majority of sleep apnea patients benefit from continuous positive airway pressure . They must wear a mask that delivers steady bursts of air throughout the night to keep the airway from collapsing. This does work in most cases, but many patients find it extremely difficult to tolerate the mask. It is often uncomfortable and the noise from the machine can make falling asleep difficult.

Fortunately, recent studies indicate that sinus surgery may be an effective alternative for some individuals with sleep apnea in Las Vegas those whose condition is the result of problems in the nose or sinuses.

Swelling of the sinuses may be the result of polyps or cysts when these grow too big, they can block the airway and interfere with breathing. Removing these obstructions via sinus surgery can provide immediate relief for these patients.

The type of sinus surgery will depend on the root cause of your problem and the severity of your symptoms. Youll likely be a candidate for one of two procedures:

    • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery . This procedure involves insertion of a flexible tube mounted with a camera through the nasal passages to remove blockages.
    • Caldwell-Luc surgery. This procedure is less common and more invasive. It involves excising larger growths in the nasal passages.

Not all sleep apnea patients will benefit from sinus surgery, so its important to talk to a Las Vegas ENT specialist to determine a treatment plan that will work for you.

In 2010, he deployed to Afghanistan as the only plastic and ENT surgeon on base. Dr. Barrera operated on local children with clefts, ear deformities, and scars of war that were brought in by patrols. After this deployment, he served the rest of his active duty commitment as the chief of facial plastic surgery at the San Antonio Military Medical Center and as the chairman of the department of otolaryngology for both the Army and the Air Force. Dr. Barrera led 70 people in the department, 17 surgeons, and 12 residents until 2014.
