Types Of Nasal Sprays
Nasal steroids are available as prescription and over-the-counter products, and are designed to alleviate symptoms of a variety of conditions, ranging from the common cold to a more serious sinus infection. They are also often recommended to treat more long-term conditions, such as chronic sinusitis. It should be noted that it is not ever safe to share nasal sprays between different people. Here is a brief overview of the different applications of different types of nasal sprays.
Nasal Sprays Vs Antihistamines
The intranasal corticosteroids, Nasacort, Flonase, and Rhinocort, are probably the most effective OTC medications for the treatment of nasal allergy symptoms. A downside to them is that they will not work on an as-needed basis.
Intranasal corticosteroids take time to work. They may begin to give relief to allergy symptoms after about six to 10 hours, but full relief may not be obtained for three to six weeks with daily use.
Antihistamines, such as Zyrtec , Allegra , and Claritin , on the other hand, tend to work fairly quickly, usually within a couple of hours of taking the medication. Therefore, these medications work well when taken on an as-needed basis.
Antihistamines work best for the treatment of itchy nose, itchy eyes, and sneezingand less well for symptoms of nasal congestion or a runny nose. Of the three newer oral antihistamine options, Zyrtec and Allegra work especially well in relieving nasal allergy symptoms, usually within an hour.
Claritin, on the other hand, doesn’t work as well and takes about three hours to take effect. All three of these antihistamines are a good choice for spring allergy relief and are generally preferred over a sedating antihistamine such as Benadryl.
Another antihistamine option is Astepro , a nasal spray that has been approved for nonprescription use in adults and children over the age of 6.
The only other medicated nasal sprays available OTC are nonsteroidal decongestants like Afrin and NasalCrom .

In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study by Kirtsreesakul et al. 112 patients with CRSwNP used either 50 mg prednisone or placebo for 14 days and reported significantly more gastrointestinal disturbances and dyspepsia in the prednisolone treated group. In a double-blind placebo-controlled trial by Venekamp et al. 174 adult patients clinically diagnosed with ARS received either 30 mg/day prednisolone or placebo for 7 days. The incidence of gastrointestinal complaints did not differ between treatment groups.
In a large nested casecontrol analysis based on the UK General Practice Research Database, 2105 cases of upper gastro-intestinal complications were compared to 11,500 controls and then evaluated for exposure to certain drugs e.g. corticosteroid use. The adjusted OR for current use of oral GCS was 1.8 for upper gastrointestinal complications overall . No statistically significant difference could be objectified for lower versus higher dosage of GCS. To our knowledge no studies in upper airway disease patients report on systemic steroid treatment and peptic ulceration.

#1: Duration
The length of the infection is an important determinant of the seriousness of the infection.
I usually consider most infections less than 3 weeks to be viral or inflammation related to congestion. At this point, the best treatment is usually medications that decrease the congestion and inflammation. This in turn will alleviate the symptoms and ultimately cure the illness.
When the illness continues beyond 3 weeks, bacterial infection can begin to develop. Though antibiotics can be considered at this point, other treatments may still be the best answer if they have not yet been given a try.
#2: Mucous Color
I will dispel a myth right here and now. Yellowish/greenish mucous does not necessarily mean the infection is bacterial.
Viruses can cause the same color mucous. The reason for the mucous is generally not the actual bacteria or virus, but the bodys immune response to the intruder.
So dont worry just because you see a colored mucous when you blow your nose. This will also improve as the infection abates.
#3: Sinus Pain
Sinus pain can occur anytime throughout a sinus infection. This is normal and means there is inflammation in the sinuses, as we discussed previously.
However, severe pain, redness over the skin, hardened skin over the sinuses, or even a severe headache are not generally normal and can indicate a bacterial infection.
