What Treatments Are Available For Sinusitis

Sinusitis can often be treated successfully with antibiotics to clear up a persistent infection, as well as nasal sprays to help keep sinus passage clear of mucus. When medication doesnt work, surgery may be necessary to unblock the sinuses or nasal passages and allow mucus to drain properly. Its generally a good idea to avoid over-the-counter nasal sprays which, when overused, can actually make congestion much worse.

Diagnosing And Treating Hives

As with any medical condition, you should not try to diagnose yourself. Hives may be a symptom of COVID-19 or a number of other things. If you do experience hives randomly, you can get tested for COVID. In cases that yield a positive result, you should seek medical attention for treatment. These hives may be treated with oral antihistamines and topical steroids. Ask your doctor for the best treatment for your COVID-related hives.

If a negative result returns, your hives could be caused by allergies. Many allergens cause hives, so its important to get an allergy test for a quick diagnosis. At NY Allergy & Sinus Centers, we can diagnose your hives in minutes. We then provide a personalized treatment plan to care for your allergies. Ask about our allergy shots that treat the root of your problem, not just the symptoms.

I was born in Chicago and raised in Central Illinois. My first ambition in life was to become a garbage truck. Realizing that wasn’t possible, I turned to his next big interest: allergies. After earning my medical degree from University of Medicine & Health Sciences, I completed pediatric residency at OSF St. Francis Medical Center/Children’s Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, IL and then went on to Saint Louis University for my Allergy/Immunology fellowship.

Having lived with food and environmental allergies my entire life, I can truly empathize with my patients’ day-to-day realities of living with allergies. I was once a patient of Dr Mohiuddin’s myself so I know firsthand how much your life can improve by seeing a caring allergist and this is what I strive to emulate. My passion comes from helping complex and challenging cases and improving their quality of life.

What Treatments Are Available For Hives

Allergy Asthma and Sinus Treatment Specialists Lexington KY

Treatment begins with a complete health history and review of your symptoms, including asking about the activities you were performing just before the hives appeared. In most cases, hives can be successfully treated with antihistamine medications to help control the bodys immune reactions. Cool compresses can help reduce itching and burning sensations. If antihistamines do not bring relief, corticosteroid medications may be prescribed, either on their own or in addition to antihistamines. Epinephrine injections may be used if the hives impede breathing. If hives occur chronically or occur in the mouth or throat and the cause cannot be determined from your health history, allergy testing may be ordered to determine the trigger.

How Is A Chronic Cough Diagnosed

Allergy Asthma and Sinus Center

A chronic cough can have many underlying causes, which makes diagnosis a critical part of treatment. Diagnosing the cause of a chronic cough relies on a physical exam and personal history, a review of lifestyle habits, imaging tests like x-ray or CT scan, lung function tests or blood work. A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope may also be used to look inside the airways for possible causes.

What Happens When Allergy And Sinusitis Coexist

With so many causes of sinusitis, the role of allergy is often overlooked and under treated. If antibiotic treatment fails to improve chronic sinusitis, a thorough allergy and immunology evaluation is clearly warranted early in the investigation.

Unfortunately, many individuals who have had longstanding sinus disease and even those who have had one or more surgeries may never seek an evaluation from an allergist. So they continue to live with their symptoms. With upper respiratory allergies present in up to 20% of Americans, it is not uncommon to have both allergic rhinitis and sinus disease. Some studies have shown the presence of both diseases in the same individual to be as high as 70%.

Of all the predisposing causes of sinus disease, underlying allergy may be the trigger most responsive to treatment. Therefore, treating underlying nasal allergies will always decrease the risk for sinus infections. Evidence of allergy on physical exam may be helpful . Also, a history of prior respiratory allergy or atopic dermatitis may help identify risk factors.
