Other Treatments For Sinusitis

Outside of our top choices, a few other antihistamines can help.

âBenadryl is unsuitable for long-term use, but it can reduce allergy symptoms short term and act as a preventative measure against sinus infection.

Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra are three second-generation antihistamines that alleviate allergy symptoms that can lead to sinusitis. Some of them can be used daily.

Other methods you can use to alleviate your sinus struggles include:

  • Putting a cold compress on your forehead, as applying ice can reduce swelling and sinus pressure.
  • Using eye drops to alleviate sinus congestion by reducing redness, itchiness, and puffiness around your eyes.
  • Checking the ingredients on your skin products, perfumes, and lotions to see if they may be affecting your sinuses. The scents of these products can aggravate the sinuses long-term.
  • Avoiding stress as much as possible. Being a new parent or working a demanding job can weaken your immune system, so make sure youâre mitigating your stress in other ways.

I have post nasal drip and dr thinks i am alergic to dusts mites. recommended singular, but I don’t like taking it. Is zyrtec or claritin a good alternative

Carmerjo81

It cost more but my PND was fixed along with my congestion with Zyrtec-D 2x a day. I suffered 4 years trying everything!! It’s a miracle drug! It won’t be immediate but after 3 days of consistent usage it starts working properly! I have used it for 6+ years. Hope this will help someone!!

+1Eve54

if your dr perscribed singulair i would take it.. its taken at bedtime, i take it at bedtime and it does help..as for zyrtec or claritin i take claritin every day as i have terrible allergies all yr long, it doesnt work well its over the counter meds both of them i use to take allegra d but that too is now over the counter which i now suffer and it stinks.

+0TrishaH

Claritin and Zyrtec are both antihistamines used to treat allergy symptoms. I have been taking Claritin for some time and it works well on reliving my allergy symptoms and has practically no side effects. Tried Zyrtec once it made me drowsy. Both Zyrtec and Claritin are available over the counter and are available in cheaper generic form. Recently I developed allergic asthma and was prescribed Singulair to treat both the allergy and asthma symptoms. Singulair has more possible severe side effects. Check with your doctor.

Sinus Infection Treatment Options

There are many treatment options for a sinus infection, but the best treatment option varies by the severity of the case. Some acute sinus infections will clear up on their own without any treatment, and you may just think it was a cold. Others require more serious interventions by a healthcare provider.

The standard treatment healthcare providers prescribe for a presumed bacterial sinus infection is an antibiotic. However, if you have a sinus infection caused by a viral infection such as the common cold, your doctor will not prescribe antibiotics as these medications only treat bacterial infections. Instead, you can treat the sinus infection symptomatically until it resolves, with nasal decongestants and antihistamines.

There are plenty of ways to treat symptoms of a sinus infection at home with over-the-counter medications and home remedies. OTC antihistamines block the effects of histamine, helping symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. Simple treatments like drinking water, keeping your sinuses hydrated , and using warm compresses, can also help treat symptoms of a sinus infection.

Keeping your nasal passages clean can help you prevent future sinus infections. If you anticipate having sinus issues during allergy or cold season, flushing out your nasal passages with a saltwater solution can help you avoid the pains of a sinus infection.

When To Call A Professional

Can You Get Zyrtec D Over The Counter

If your symptoms don’t improve within a week of beginning treatment, call your doctor. Call sooner if symptoms are getting worse.

If you have repeated bouts of acute sinusitis, you may have allergies or another treatable cause of sinus congestion. Ask your doctor for advice.

Whats The Difference Between Sinusitis And Rhinitis In Dogs

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled, bony cavities that connect with the nasal cavities. During a sinus infection, these cavities become filled with fluid and develop inflamed lining.

Rhinitis is the inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose. If both the nose and sinus cavities are affected, the term rhinosinusitis is used.

Both of these conditions can occur alone, or as part of an upper respiratory infection. They also appear similar in dogs, causing many of the same signs of illness.

Which One Works Best

Many studies have shown that steroid nasal sprays are very effective at combating allergy symptoms in the nose. For example, in one study, researchers compared fluticasone and triamcinolone nasal sprays by asking 233 patients to fill out questionnaires over 21 days of treatment. The results of the study showed that both steroids were equally effective. It also showed that both medications were safe and didnt cause serious side effects. Another study from 2019 that also compared fluticasone and triamcinolone showed similar results.

Lets not forget about Afrin. Afrin is an older drug thats proven to work, but as we mentioned, you dont use it in the same way as Flonase or Nasacort. Afrin is for temporary symptom relief. It works in minutes but only lasts 12 hours. Flonase and Nasacort are for prevention. They take about 2 to 4 weeks to reach their full effect.

Nasal Spray Dependence And The Rebound Effect

The #1 Best Antihistamine Remedy for Sinus, Itching and Hives

As the saying goes, too much of a good thing is never good. Once the effect of a decongestant nasal spray wears off, the nasal congestion that returns can be far more severe.

This is called a rebound effect, and may occur if your nose becomes less responsive to the effects of a nasal spray due to excessive use.

Excessive use of nasal sprays can lead to a tolerance build-up. If youre heavy-handed with your use of nasal sprays, you might gradually find yourself requiring higher doses to help ease your congestion. Therefore, you should not use nasal sprays for more than five consecutive days.

Doctors have termed this rebound congestion rhinitis medicamentosa. The phrase refers to congestion or rhinitis that is explicitly caused by medication. In this instance, the excessive use of nasal spray decongestants is the cause of congestion.

Some symptoms of nasal spray overuse include:

  • Use of nasal spray for more than a week
  • Use of nasal spray more frequently than directed
  • Congestion upon skipping a dose

With that said, prescription nasal sprays containing steroids do not cause a rebound effect and can be used on a daily basis for years. More often than not, these steroid sprays are not decongestants, but rather treatments for nasal allergies.

What To Do For Sinus Pressure And Pain At Home

Here are the top 10 at-hometreatments to help ease your sinus pain and inflammation to get rid of your sinus infection faster.

  • Flush. Use a Neti pot, a therapy that uses a salt and water solution, to flush your nasal passages. Nasal irrigation using the Neti pot has been a tried-and-true sinus treatment method for centuries. I have patients who swear by Neti pots and use them daily or weekly to keep their sinuses flowing well. Remember to use distilled water only.
  • Spray. Use an over-the-counter nasal decongestant spray that contains salt water to help keep your nasal passages moist, unblock congestion and treat inflammation. Some sprays, like Afrin®, can only be used for a maximum of three days. If you exceed three days, you will get “rebound” or worse nasal congestion. Other nasal sprays, like fluticasone, are more effective the longer you use them.
  • Hydrate. Drink a lot of fluidswater and/or juiceto help thin your mucus. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which can cause dehydration.
  • Rest. Get plenty of rest to help your body fight infection and speed up recovery. While you sleep, prop yourself up with a couple of pillows. Staying elevated can help you breathe more comfortably.
  • Steam. Breathe in steam from a pot or bowl of warm water or take a hot shower. You also can place a warm, wet towel on your face, followed by a cool towel. to help ease sinus pain and open your nasal passages.

    How Is Sinusitis Diagnosed

If you are experiencing pain and pressure that doesn’t clear up within a week to 10 days, it may be time to schedule a doctors appointment. You can visit your primary care physician to be evaluated for a sinus infection.

A sinus infection is usually diagnosed empirically without need for imaging or cultures, explains Lindsey Elmore, Pharm.D., BCPS. A simple medical exam and review of your symptoms should be enough for your doctor to identify a sinus infection. Your doctor will likely check your nose with a light to look for inflammation. He or she also may ask you about any pain youre feeling to see if it traces back to the sinus cavities.

In rare cases, or if you get frequent infections, your doctor may perform other tests to rule out other conditions like a fungal infection. This may include allergy testing, a nasal endoscopy to visually inspect the sinuses, swabbing your nose for a culture of nasal drainage, or lab imagery to scan for abnormalities.

Symptoms may be acute or chronic , and you should seek a doctors help if you have symptoms that last more than 10 days, or are unresolved with over the counter agents as this may be an indication that you have a bacterial sinus infection, says Dr. Elmore.
