Post Nasal Drip Treatment

The treatment for your post nasal drip will depend on what’s causing it. For example, it’s easier to resolve postnasal drip caused by spicy foods than it is to kick a sinus infection. It’s important to address the underlying condition in order to treat post nasal drip.

In addition to treating the cause, some remedies can help specifically with post nasal drip, Thompson says. Here are a few common remedies:

1. Try nasal irrigation

Nasal irrigation with saline is highly recommended to combat post nasal drip. “Saline irrigations help flush out excess and thick mucus,” Thompson says. “Also, saline irrigations moisturize the nasal cavity and reduce the symptom of post nasal drip.”

Using a neti pot, flush one side of your nose, then the other, with distilled or boiled water . Be sure to follow instructions carefully so that you don’t increase your risk of infection by flushing your nose.

2. Breathe in steam or a humidifier

Steam or a humidifier can help clear mucus from your nose. “Humidifier and steam inhalation can help moisturize the air and thin the mucus so that it passes more freely,” Thompson says.

That’s why chicken soup or a cup of tea can also be great remedies the hot liquid and steam help clear your nasal passages.

3. Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water can help thin mucus, preventing the irritating postnasal drip feeling that something is stuck at the back of your throat.

Years Of Throat Clearing Thick Mucus And Post Nasal Drip Sensation

derekjp

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I’m often able to hock up out of my mouth .

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin , it’s very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won’t move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it’s back again…

Tried all reflux and allergy medications , and they can’t identify the problem… All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side , my symptoms go too .

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I’ve been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline and gabapentin , to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can’t live much longer like this, it’s completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse

Thanks for any help at all.

What Is Not A Likely Cause Of Persistent Dry Cough

How To Get Rid of Nasal Congestion : Remedies For Blocked ...

Here are the dangerous things patients often worry about when they have a cough that doesnt go away. And heres why you probably dont need to lose sleep over them.

  • Lung cancer. Studies have found that in cases of persistent coughs, lung cancer is the cause in less than 2% of them. A history of smoking is the biggest risk factor for lung cancer. Weight loss, difficulty breathing, coughing up bloodthese are the serious warning signs of lung cancer .

  • Pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism is when a blood clot in the deep veins of your legs dislodges, travels up your body, and gets stuck in your lungs. It will cause difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. If you just have a dry cough, thats very very unlikely to be a sign of PE.

  • Tuberculosis. Cough can be one of the symptoms if your lungs get infected with tuberculosis , but you wont get that alone. If you have TB, youll also likely have night sweats, sudden weight loss, and low-grade fevers. You wont feel good at all.

Final note: If you have a chronic cough along with fever, shortness of breath , chest pain, weakness, and/or nausea and vomiting, it is NOT a persistent dry cough. Thats a different story. See your provider if this is the case.
