Why Is My Snot Red

Higher concentrations of blood in the nose will turn your mucus red. As with pink snot, this is usually caused by a hit to the nose, blowing too hard, or breathing in dry air. It could also be a nosebleed.

To prevent dry nasal or sinus cavities try:

  • Applying Aquaphor or Vaseline to the inside of your nose
  • Using a Neti pot with sterilized saltwater
  • Blowing your nose gently
  • Using a humidifier

Anatomy Of The Paranasal Sinuses

The paranasal sinuses comprise four pairs of sinuses that surround the nose and drain into the nasal cavity by way of narrow channels called ostia . Mucus leaving the frontal and maxillary sinuses drains through the ethmoid sinuses , so a backup in the ethmoids is likely to clog the other two types of sinuses. The sphenoid sinuses are located deep in the skull, behind the eyes. Sinusitis develops when one or more sinuses become blocked.

There are millions of bacteria in our noses, and most of the time, theyre harmless. Even when a few creep into the sinuses, they dont cause trouble, as long as they keep draining into the nose along with mucus. But if sinus drainage is blocked, glands in the sinuses continue to produce mucus, and the resulting pool of backed-up mucus provides what Dr. Metson calls the perfect culture medium. The bacteria grow out of control, causing infection, and the immune system kicks off an inflammatory response. The result: swelling, which causes and facial pain mucus buildup, which produces congestion and an influx of white blood cells to fight the bacteria, which thickens the mucus and may tint it yellow or green. Other symptoms include loss of smell or taste, cough, bad breath, fever, toothache, and fullness in the ears.

What Is A Common Cold

It’s an illness caused by many different kinds of viruses, which are tiny infectious particles.

You can’t miss the symptoms:

  • Nasal congestion

You may also get a cough and a mild fever. The symptoms usually build, peak, and slowly disappear. Some medications can ease symptoms. For example, may decrease drainage and open the nasal passages. Pain relievers may help with fever and headache. Cough medicine may help, as well.

Colds typically last from a few days to about a week or longer.

Sometimes, a cold may cause swelling in the sinuses, hollow spaces in your skull that are connected to each other. The swelling can prevent the flow of mucus.

This can lead to a sinus infection. If you have pain around your face and eyes — and thick yellow or green mucus for more than a week — see your doctor.

First Line Of Defense Against Sinusitis: Nasal Irrigation

One of the simplest, cheapest, and most effective ways to prevent and treat sinus problems is nasal irrigation. Using a homemade solution, you can often relieve sinusitis symptoms, reduce reliance on nasal sprays and antibiotics, and improve your quality of life. At least once a day, follow these steps:

  • Stir ½ teaspoon of non-iodized salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda into 2 cups of lukewarm distilled or previously boiled water .
  • Fill a small bulb syringe with the saltwater solution.
  • Lean over your bathroom or kitchen sink, insert the tip of the syringe just inside one nostril, and gently squeeze the bulb. The water will run back out the nostril and into the sink. Use at least one full bulb of solution.
  • Repeat the procedure in the other nostril.
  • Thoroughly rinse and dry the bulb syringe or neti pot after each use.

Its spring in Oregon, which means probably your nose is running. Maybe the discharge is yellowish. You also have pain behind your eyes, and facial pressure that increases when you bend forward. Are you thinking: Uh oh, I must have a sinus infection, I better get some antibiotics? Think again.

Here is a primer on sinusitis, the vast majority of which DONT require antibiotics to get better.

The sinuses are hollow air spaces within the facial bones surrounding the nose. They are covered with a thin lining that produces mucous, which normally drains through the nose and back of the throat. When the sinus linings are irritated, they respond by producing more mucous, and this can cause pressure, swelling , pain and further irritation.

Warm liquids can help to break up some of the mucus in your throat and reduce inflammation. Herbal tea such as thyme, marshmallow and horehound leaves can relax the respiratory tract and thin the mucus. Chicken soup can also provide nourishment.

    3. Salt Water Gargling

Mix about half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water. Place some of the mixture into your mouth. Tilt your head back and gargle. This process, when done several times throughout the day, helps to clear out trapped mucus.

    4. Things to Avoid

Many things that we consume can cause phlegm to build up, so you may need to expel these things from your daily dietary routine. Three main things to avoid is smoking, dairy products and the inhalation of chemical products. All of them can lead to the production of excess mucus. It would also be advisable to avoid deep fried fatty foods.

When you have a sinus infection, you may need to blow your nose often because of nasal discharge, which can be cloudy, green, or yellow. This discharge comes from your infected sinuses and drains into your nasal passages.

The discharge may also bypass your nose and drain down the back of your throat. You may feel a tickle, an itch, or even a sore throat.

This is called postnasal drip, and it may cause you to cough at night when youre lying down to sleep, and in the morning after getting up. It may also cause your voice to sound hoarse.

How To Diagnose Your Cold Vs Sinus Infection

When symptoms become bad enough or last long enough that you want to seek medical advice, an experienced ENT specialist can diagnose what is causing your discomfort. A cold can often be diagnosed with a standard physical exam, and some viruses can be confirmed with blood testing if necessary.

If the doctor suspects a sinus infection, they may perform a rhinoscopy or endoscopy to view the inside of your sinus cavities with a thin endoscope device. Once it is confirmed that a sinus infection is the source of your symptoms the doctor can then work to determine the root cause of the infection, be it allergies, nasal polyps, or another underlying source. If allergies are suspected as the cause, testing can be completed to diagnose which allergies are at play. The best form of treatment for your infection will depend on the diagnosed source of the issue.

First What Is Mucus And What Does It Do

    Mucus in Nose for Weeks

Having some mucus in your nose is pretty important. This slimy stuff helps warm and humidify the air you breathe, Anthony Del Signore, M.D., assistant professor of otolaryngology and director of rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, tells SELF. This is important because breathing air thats too cold and dry can aggravate your airways, which is why it can burn like hell to breathe outside in wintertime. So, even though mucus is kind of gross, it contributes a fair amount to your physical comfort.

Mucus is meant to keep you comfortable in another way too: As a vigilant guard on the front lines of your bodys biological defense system, Michael Benninger, M.D., chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute, tells SELF. Mucus traps foreign invaders that could make you ill, including viruses, bacteria, and allergens. Ideally, little hairlike projections called cilia then shuffle those invaders to the front of your nose so you sneeze them out, meaning they cant enter your lungs and make you sick.

If your sinus infection lasts longer than eight weeks, or if standard antibiotic treatment is not working, a sinus CT scan may help your allergist diagnose the problem. Your allergist may examine your nose or sinus openings. The exam uses a long, thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and a light at one end that is inserted through the nose. It is not painful. Your allergist may give you a light anesthetic nasal spray to make you more comfortable.

Mucus cultures: If your sinus infection is chronic or has not improved after several rounds of antibiotics, a mucus culture may help to determine what is causing the infection. Most mucus samples are taken from the nose. However, it is sometimes necessary to get mucus directly from the sinuses.

Knowing what kind of bacteria is causing the infection can lead to more effective antibiotic therapy. A fungus could also cause your sinus infection. Confirming the presence of fungus is important. Fungal sinus infection needs to be treated with antifungal agents, rather than antibiotics. In addition, some forms of fungal sinus infection allergic fungal sinus infection, for example do not respond to antifungal agents and often require the use of oral steroids.

Pain Or Pressure In Your Sinuses

Facial pain is a common symptom of sinusitis. You have several different sinuses above and below your eyes, as well as behind your nose. Any of these air-filled cavities can hurt when you have a sinus infection.

Inflammation and swelling can cause your sinuses to ache with dull pressure. This is because inflammation may alter the typical path of mucus from the nose to the back of the throat.

    You may feel pain in:

    • on either side of your nose
    • in your upper jaws and teeth
    • between your eyes

This may lead to a headache. Headaches caused by sinus infections can occur where the sinuses are or in other places.

Being stuffy makes your snot lose its water content. It becomes thick and even cloudy both signs that you may have a cold or infection brewing.

The common cold can make you feel generally unwell. Your symptoms will usually develop between one and three days after being exposed to the virus. Children are particularly prone to colds. Adults, on the other hand, may experience between two and three colds each year.

    Throat Irritation And Cough

As discharge from your sinuses drains down the back of your throat, it can cause irritation, especially over a long period of time. This can lead to a persistent and annoying cough, which can be worse when lying down to sleep or first thing in the morning after getting up from bed.

It can also make sleeping difficult. Sleeping upright or with your head elevated can help reduce the frequency and intensity of your coughing.
