Here Are 5 Remedies That Can Alleviate The Pain And Discomfort Of Troublesome Sinuses:

  • Hydrate and humidify: That means do not shirk away from drinking a good amount of soothing warm liquid foods, water, etc. Humidifiers and vaporizers are commonly used in people’s homes to get more moisture into the air and to counteract dryness in the nose and sinuses. Run a humidifier or a vaporiser inside the room — get the sort that is portable and can be moved from room to room. Just make sure that the humidifiers stay clean of fungus and moulds.
  • Steam Inhalation: The warm, vapour laden steam — when it goes up your respiratory tract — helps relieve congestion in the sinuses by loosening the mucous. There are several steam inhalation devices available in the market. You can fill them up with water and plug the device into an electricity point and get steam that you can inhale. Alternatively, you can use a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel as you bend over it. Some people add menthol, camphor, or eucalyptus oils to the water, but we advise that you check with your doctor before adding anything to the water.
  • Warm and cold compresses: Rotating warm and cold compresses on your sinuses should also help relieve congestion and agony. Lie on the bed with a warm compress draped across your nose, cheeks, and forehead for three minutes. Replace that with a cold compress for 30 seconds. Repeat for the next 10-15 minutes. Do it a few times times in a day.

Changes of CBF in response to vitamin C. Ciliary beat frequency of cultured human nasal epithelial cells, measured before and every 1 min after treatment with 0.01% , 0.10% and 1.00% vitamin C, or HBSS over 20 minutes. *P< 0.05, vs. 0 min of each group.

Following treatment with 0.01% vitamin C, human nasal CBF increased over the first 2 min. The highest CBF, which was 10.13 ± 1.56 Hz, was observed at the first measurement point . CBF then gradually decreased to the baseline level. No distinguishable change in CBF relative to the baseline CBF was identified over the subsequent 18 min .

Similarly, 0.10% vitamin C increased CBF over the first 4 min. The highest CBF, 10.07 ± 1.77 Hz, was again observed at 1 min after treatment. CBF then gradually decreased to the baseline level. No distinguishable change in CBF relative to the baseline CBF was identified over the subsequent 16 min .

Apply Hot Or Cold Packs To Congested Sinuses

Another common natural treatment for congestion is applying hot or cold packs across the bridge of your nose. Although this is certainly a soothing activity, it wont do much in the long run. Theres no evidence that hot or cold packs reduce nasal inflammation, but if it makes you feel better, then theres no problem with them, says Stringer.

If youre looking for quick, simple congestion relief, you can create a hot or cold pack using items you have at home: For a ready-made cold pack, take a bag of frozen peas or other frozen vegetables out of your freezer, wrap it in a towel, and lay it across your face. For a hot pack, wring out a wet washcloth and heat it in the microwave for approximately one minute. Before laying it across your face, be sure to check that its not too hot.

In some, excessive mucous production occurs, which can result in chronic drainage of mucus down the back of the throat. Doctors call this post-nasal drip. It’s a condition that affects millions, and not a day goes by that I do not encounter a patient with post-nasal drip symptoms.

Not everyone with sinus congestion will develop infections. Some simply have breathing difficulty and chronic allergy symptoms due to sinus inflammation.

Hydrate And Soothe With Warm Soups And Teas

Many people swear by drinking liquids, especially hot liquids, to help relieve a stuffy nose. Although its certainly important to stay hydrated especially when youre not feeling well the effect of hot liquids on congestion can mostly be chalked up to the placebo effect.

Researchers who split up a group of people with cold and flu symptoms, giving half of them a room-temperature drink and the other half a hot drink, found that there was no measurable improvement in nasal stuffiness in either group. But interestingly, the group that drank the hot drink reported greater relief from symptoms. Researchers also speculated that in addition to the placebo effect, the taste of the hot drink also contributed to the favorable response.

If youre ready to heat up your own congestion remedy, try hot teas, such as chamomile and green tea, hot soups like chicken noodle, or a glass of hot water with a dollop of honey and some lemon. These have been used traditionally in many cultures, and are safe, but have limited research evidence backing their use specifically for nasal congestion.

    Stay Away From Pollen

Pollen allergies like hay fever causes nasal congestion. To get relief we suggest you minimize your contact time with the allergens. A good way to do this is to take your shoes off before you enter your home. Change your clothes and brush your hair or shower. Wash your face. Pollen can trigger allergies around your eyes and its good to clean that out. Regularly wash your sheets and pillow cases. Another tip is to keep your windows closed. You want to keep the pollen out.

The Proper Way To Use Elderberries When Youre Sick

    Blackmores Horseradish Garlic + C 50 Tablets Nasal ...

Elderberries are an effective treatment for sinus infections, but only if you treat them the right way first. For the best results, follow these guidelines when purchasing, preparing, and consuming elderberry or related supplements.

    Your elderberries should be:

    • Stored cold while youre waiting to use them.
    • Ripe when it comes time to use them.
    • Cooked, as raw berries contain trace amounts of cyanogenic glycosides. When chewed raw, they can release cyanide into the body, which can cause nausea and vomiting.
    • Dried, which is a safe alternative to cooking them.
    • Lab-tested if youre consuming an elderberry supplement.
    • Consumed in moderation, as overconsumption can lead to headaches or stomach and digestive issues.

Unless youve done significant research, its best to avoid other parts of the elder plant. The flowers, bark, buds, leaves, and roots contain higher levels of cyanogenic glycoside, along with a bitter alkaloid.8

    Its Probably Too Late

People who regularly take supplemental doses of vitamin C may recover slightly faster from the common cold than others, according to a 2013 review of 31 studies including nearly 10,000 individuals. But those people are no less likely to get sick in the first place, the review found. And taking high doses of vitamin C once you start feeling cold symptoms won’t help you recover any faster, either, the researchers found.

Research Shows High Dose Of Oral Liposomal Vitamin C Helps Covid Patients Recover Faster

The spread of the coronavirus remains unabated even after six months of damage. There are no targeted antiviral medications or vaccines available yet to fight the disease.

But a study has revealed that high dose of oral liposomal Vitamin C in a drink form, when administered to adults hospitalised with Covid-19 along with highly nutritious food, paved the path for faster recovery.

The findings were published in a research article titledThe Role of High-dose Liposomal Oral Vitamin C Treatment for Covid-19 .

Experts, while recommending a high dose of Vitamin C as an adjunct therapy to combat the infection, also advise frequent hand-washing with soap for at least 20 seconds, use of hand sanitizers, avoiding coughing/sneezing openly, not touching eyes, nose or mouth, social distancing, wearing a face mask and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, as the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection.

Sharing details of the findings, Manickam Mahalingam, Chairman, ABT Group, said the patients involved in the reaserch were among the earliest cases of the dreaded virus in the country.

We made a comparative study with a batch of 50 patients, who were given 500 mg of regular Vitamin C twice every day, while another 50 were given high dose a day, he said.

The patients were subjected to nasal swab and repeat RT-PCR on the 10th, 11th and 14th day of admission.

Rinse With A Neti Pot And Saline Solution

Top 5 Natural Sinus Allergy Relief Supplements & Remedies

Although these teapot-shaped devices may seem like the latest trend in alternative medicine, the neti pot is anything but new. Used for centuries by yoga and Ayurvedic practitioners in India, nasal irrigation is a gentle and effective way to clear the nasal passages of mucus and allergens. Trying any method that delivers salt water to the nose is a good way to start relieving congestion, says Stringer.

To use this natural remedy, fill the neti pot with a saline solution made of warm water and salt, then insert the spout into one nostril while you tilt your head to the other side, allowing the solution to flow up into your nasal passage and then out the other nostril. When making the saline solution, pharmaceutical grade salt is recommended.

Neti pots are generally inexpensive theyre available in health food stores for around $10 to $20 and research shows that they work well to relieve congestion. Researchers at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who studied adults with chronic nasal and sinus problems, found that people treated with nasal irrigation had greater improvement of symptoms over two months than those treated with saline sprays.

In addition, researchers in China found that nasal irrigation with saline reduced the need for steroid sprays in children with allergies. Neti pots are safe to use on a daily basis.

    Flush With A Nasal Irrigation

Nasal irrigation, a traditional Ayurvedic treatment, has been used for thousands of years to treat congestion and sinus problems by removing mucus and debris from the nasal cavities. You can find a variety of nasal irrigation devices at natural grocers or pharmacies. Try a neti pot, a small ceramic pot specially designed to irrigate sinuses, or a squeeze bottle. Fill either one with 1 pint of lukewarm distilled water mixed with 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Check the health department guidelines in your area your tap water may contain low levels of bacteria and protozoa that can stay alive in the nasal passages and cause potentially serious infections in some individuals. During the day, keep nasal cavities clear with sprays designed to moisturize and soothe sinuses. Look for formulas made with xylitol, a sugar alcohol derived from fruits and vegetables thats been shown to reduce the risk of sinus infections.

Allergic Reactions To Excessive Vitamin C

Most allergic reactions to vitamins are to ingredients in vitamin supplements and will not occur if the vitamin is consumed naturally in foods. Most vitamin C supplements are synthetic and contain other inactive ingredients that may be the cause of an allergic reaction. If you develop reactions only when you take a certain amount of vitamin C supplements, your symptoms may be common side effects and not related to an allergy.
