Ways To Cure Sinus Congestion

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Clear A Congested Nose

Treating sinusitis | Consumer Reports

Apple cider vinegar is another remedy for nasal congestion that has gained a lot of popularity among general users but not enough scientific support. Thus, you must invariably consult your doctor before trying it to avoid any undue side effects.

Due to its alkaline nature, ACV may help dissolve the mucus accumulated inside your airways to relieve nasal congestion and restore normal breathing. Moreover, it is credited with significant antimicrobial properties that can help sanitize the insides of your nose.

But all these are suggested benefits with no credible proof.

On the contrary, ACV is scientifically recognized as a mild acid, which is not safe for direct application.

Many people soak Q-tips or paper towels in ACV to clean their nose with it. This can damage the sensitive skin of your nasal passages and is strictly ill-advised. Similarly, nasal irrigation with ACV is a complete no-no.

The least dangerous ACV remedy is adding a few drops of this potent liquid in your steam bath. However, there are far simpler and safer remedies to clear your nasal congestion than using apple cider vinegar.

Sinus Infection Vs Covid

Some sinus infection and COVID-19 symptoms may overlap. Both illnesses can cause a fever, headaches, nasal congestion, fatigue or a sore throat. Essential Oils Alone Or In A Vapor Salve

Some essential oils are amazingly fabulous for helping clear up your sinuses! Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Rosemary, etc. are some examples.

Always dilute your essential oils in a carrier oil before using on your skin, just to be on the safe side. You can add essential oils to a carrier oil and rub in that way. A carrier oil would be almond oil or fractionated coconut oil. A good amount of essential oil for an adult is 12 to 15 drops or so in a 10 mL roller bottle.

Add in your essential oils, swirl gently. Then add your carrier oil and shake to mix.

Heres an article that has recipes for nasal congestion in roller bottle form. Using roller bottles are convenient and easy ways to have instant relief right in your pocket! This article has a version for adults and one that is kid-safe too.

My preferred way is to use the essential oils in your very own Vapor Rub.

Steam inhalation therapy is a commonly applied natural remedy for instant relief from sinus congestion. This remedy works a natural expectorant, increasing the bronchial secretion and facilitating the expulsion of mucus by air passages of the lungs. This will make it less difficult for you to cough up the phlegm.

Required Ingredients:

  • One tablespoon of crushed carom seeds
  • A cup of water

Boil the water and add the seeds . Inhale the steam. Make sure to keep your head one meter or so away from the cup where you are inhaling the steam.

You can also run a hot shower until the steam builds up in the bathroom, then breathe it in. it is recommended that you do this twice a day until the sinuses clear.

Another option is to soak a washcloth in warm water and place it over your face. Leave it on for 12 minutes. Do this a few times a day.

You can inhale the steam from boiling water after adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to it.

Notes: Steam inhalation is generally not recommended for children because they can burn themselves. It may also not be advisable for pregnant women, people with central nervous system disorders, a heart condition or high blood pressure.

What Is A Sinus Infection

The sinuses, or sinus cavities, are hollow spaces that air flows through within the bones surrounding the nose. A sinus infection or sinusitis occurs when your nasal cavities become swollen and inflamed. Normally, your sinuses are filled with air. When sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection.

How long do sinus infections last? Well, that depends on what type of sinus infection you have. Acute sinusitis can last over two weeks even with appropriate treatment. If your sinus infection lasts longer than 10 to 14 days, then youre more likely to have bacterial sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis lasts much longer at least 12 weeks! Chronic sinusitis with polyps is an inflammation of the sinuses that lasts 12 weeks or longer and is associated with having nasal polyps. Other forms of chronic sinusitis are associated with allergies or a deviated septum and also last 12 weeks or longer.

How can you tell what type of sinus infection you have? Your doctor wont be able to tell you if your sinus infection is bacterial or viral based on symptoms or an exam alone. The best way to tell the root of a sinus infection is symptom duration. If its a viral sinus infection, it should start to improve after five to seven days. On the other hand, a bacterial infection often lasts seven to 10 days or even longer and the infection can get worse after seven days.

Add Moisture To The Air With A Humidifier Or Vaporizer

Battling a cold or the flu can leave you feeling dried out and dehydrated, so many people turn to humidifiers or vaporizers to relieve congested sinuses. Extra humidity via humidifiers can provide a lot of relief, says Dr. Stringer. Humidifiers help break up congestion by adding moisture to the air, which helps to thin the mucus in your nose.

Although warm-mist and cool-mist humidifiers are equally effective, its better to use a cool-mist humidifier for a child, to avoid an accidental burn from the warm mist. Also be sure to keep your humidifier clean to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. Follow the cleaning instructions that come with the humidifier, or simply wipe it down every day with a 10 percent bleach solution .

First Id like to remind you that Im not a doctor, and this information should not replace communicating with your doctor, especially if you suffer from chronic sinus inflammation.

But, were here for the natural sinus relief.

Whats Happening In My Body

Natural Sinus Allergy Treatment

Most sinus infections come from colds that start in the nose.

A lot of sinus infections are caused by coronaviruses.

These viruses replicate in the nose. Your immune system then kicks off an inflammatory response to help kill the virus. This can cause swelling in the sinuses, leading to your symptoms.

Unlike bacterial infections, viral infections dont respond to antibiotics and usually just need to run their course. But you dont have to take it lying down!

Foods That Can Affect Sinus Health

When youre looking for the most effective sinus decongestant, sometimes itt the things you DONT use that may make a huge difference.

Did you know there are foods that can cause sinus inflammation? Of course, this is different for all of us, but you might want to consider avoiding certain kinds of foods.

According to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, these kinds of foods may contribute to excess congestion:

  • Processed sugars

  • Dairy foods and other foods high in saturated fats. Honestly, when I stopped partaking of my beloved heavy whipping cream in my bullet proof coffee, my congestion settled right down. There must be something to this. Unfortunately.

  • Monosodium glutamate is a chemical flavor enhancer thats found in most processed foods these days. Its terrible for you.

  • Omega-6 fatty acids. These are not the Omega-3s you WANT in your diet.the Omega-6 fatty acids are those related to corn, soy, and highly processed oils.

  • Gluten. Yep-wheat and many grains can contribute to congestion.

  • Highly processed and refined carbohydrates-the white carbs such as instant potatoes, white flours, and others.

You know, when I started eating a more paleo/keto style of diet lifestyle, I noticed a nearly immediate reduction of general inflammation in my body, including sinus congestion. You might want to consider becoming a label reader and removing some of these items to see if it helps!

OKnow to the nitty gritty ways to lose that stuffed up nose!

Causes & Risk Factors

Any health situation that blocks off the vital drainage channels of your sinuses can cause a sinus infection including:

  • Respiratory infections like the common cold
  • Hay fever or exposure to allergens such as cigarette smoke, dry air and pollutants
  • Obstructions in the nasal or sinus cavities including nasal polyps, deviated septum, or nasal bone spur
  • Non-allergic rhinitis
  • Changes in air pressure
  • Infections resulting from dental problems
  • Physical injury to the sinuses
  • Bacteria, viruses, and fungi

The five most common bacteria that can cause sinus infections are: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Risk factors for sinus infections include:

  • Having asthma
  • Being in the hospital, especially if the reason you are in the hospital is related to a head injury or you needed a tube inserted into your nose

Use Some Steambut Don’t Expect A Long

Steamwhether from a humidifier or a hot showercan provide some symptomatic comfort, but isnt really a long-term solution, Mas Takashima, M.D., chair of otolaryngology at Houston Methodist Hospital, tells Health.

Certain areas are moist anyway and you can cause an overgrowth of mold , he explains. But for people who feel dry air or excessively dry sinuses are contributing to their pain, steam can be helpful.

Apply Hot Or Cold Packs To Congested Sinuses

How to Relieve Sinus Pressure without Nasal Decongestants ...

Another common natural treatment for congestion is applying hot or cold packs across the bridge of your nose. Although this is certainly a soothing activity, it wont do much in the long run. Theres no evidence that hot or cold packs reduce nasal inflammation, but if it makes you feel better, then theres no problem with them, says Stringer.

If youre looking for quick, simple congestion relief, you can create a hot or cold pack using items you have at home: For a ready-made cold pack, take a bag of frozen peas or other frozen vegetables out of your freezer, wrap it in a towel, and lay it across your face. For a hot pack, wring out a wet washcloth and heat it in the microwave for approximately one minute. Before laying it across your face, be sure to check that its not too hot.
