You probably have leftover cephalexin and don’t want to see a doctor or buy more medicine, right, so you want to know if it’s ok to use it? I don’t know, call your pharmacist. Bear in mind though that when antibiotics are prescribed, you are supposed to take all of them for the whole 7-10 days, so you shouldn’t have any left over. And if you do, remember that a partial course of antibiotics can cause the germ to gain immunity, making treatment that much more difficult. See a doctor.

How Can A Sinus Infection Affect Your Ears

Most sinusitis-related ear problems, including tinnitus, are caused by the congestion that occurs during a sinus infection. To better understand this phenomenon, lets take a second to review a few facts about sinusitis.

Sinusitis most frequently occurs when a virus or bacteria irritates the tissues of your sinus cavities. This irritation can lead to swelling which, in turn, can lead to mucus buildup and congestion.

Your sinus cavities and ears are interconnected systems, so congestion in the sinuses can create ear congestion, as well. Congestion in the ear may block the tube known as the Eustachian Tube that connects the middle ear to the outer ear and helps regulate pressure within the ear. When the Eustachian Tube is blocked, the pressure is allowed to build up around the eardrum, which is ultimately what causes ringing in the ears, aka tinnitus.

Whether you have an acute sinus infection or a sinus infection that wont go away, so long as the congestion is severe enough, it can cause tinnitus.

A bacterial infection is caused by an opportunistic overgrowth of bacterial organisms in the bodys tissue or organs. A common condition known as strep throat is actually an overgrowth of the bacteria streptococcus pyogenes, sometimes referred to as group A streptococcus, in the throat or on the tonsils. Earaches may be caused by bacteria in the inner or outer ear, and they may lead to fluid build-up and pressure. A toothache could be an abscess of bacteria below the gums. Bacterial infections come in many forms.

Antibiotics are the pinnacle of treatment against bacterial infections. The first antibiotic discovered was penicillin, and it belongs to a group of antibiotics known as beta-lactam antibiotics. Beta-lactams attack the cell wall of bacteria, rendering the bacteria powerless and allowing the body to resolve the infection. Since the discovery of penicillin, there have been many classes and types of beta-lactam antibiotics developed. Cephalexin and amoxicillin are two commonly used beta-lactam antibiotics which have both similarities and differences between them.

What Are The Main Differences Between Cephalexin And Amoxicillin

Cephalexin is a prescription medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, which belongs under the larger classification of beta-lactam antibiotics. Cephalexin interferes with cell wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins inside the cellular wall. Ultimately, when cephalexin is dosed appropriately, it causes lysis, or destruction, or the bacterial cell. Different bacterial types contain different bacterial binding proteins, so cephalexins effectiveness varies with different types of bacteria.

Cephalexin is available as an oral tablet or capsule, as well as an oral suspension. The brand name of cephalexin is Keflex. It is used by infants, children, and adults.

Amoxicillin is a prescription medication also used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a penicillin antibiotic but also falls under the larger classification of beta-lactam antibiotics. Amoxicillin, like cephalexin, interferes with cell wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins inside the cellular wall leading to the destruction of the bacterial cell.

Amoxicillin is available as an oral tablet or capsule, chewable tablet, as well as an oral suspension. The brand name of amoxicillin is Amoxil or Polymox. It is used by infants, children, and adults.

How Can I Stay Healthy While Taking Keflex

If you have a bacterial infection that requires an antibiotic like Keflex, following your healthcare providerâs instructions is important. Take the drug as prescribed and on schedule to ensure optimal benefits and reduce the risk of resistance.

If you have a busy home or work life, it can be easy to miss a dose. It often helps to set daily alarm reminders on your cellphone and to keep the pills on hand if you are planning to run errands or juggle appointments.

Importantly, never stop treatment early, even if you are feeling 100% better. Doing so allows antibiotic-resistant mutations to âescapeâ and multiply, making future antibiotic therapies less effective.

Try to avoid alcohol to better manage antibiotic side effects. Alcohol use with antibiotics can cause diarrhea and stomach upset. You might also consider taking a probiotic supplement, which may help lower the risk of diarrhea. If you experience severe, persistent, or worsening side effects while taking Keflex, call your healthcare provider immediately.

Senior dosage

The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects. Your doctor may start you on a lowered dose or a different dosing schedule. This can help keep levels of this drug from building up too much in your body.

Special dosage considerations

For adults and children with kidney problems:

  • People with a creatinine clearance of 3059 mL/min: maximum daily dose should not exceed 1 g
  • People with a CrCL of 15 to 29 mL/min: 250 mg taken every 8 or 12 hours
  • People with a CrCL of 5 to 14 mL/min: 250 mg every 24 hours
  • People with a CrCL of 1 to 4 mL/min: 250 mg every 48 or 60 hours

5.5.1. Topical antifungals

Physicians should avoid prescribing any topical antifungal therapy for routine patients with CRSsNP due to the systemic review of randomized controlled trials. Also, clinicians must avoid cost of ineffective therapy, unnecessary side effects, and shift of sinonasal flora .

5.5.2. Oral antifungals

For a significant subgroup of patients, fungi are considered as a causative agent of CRS with eosinophilic inflammation. Hence, it has been thought that antifungals have a possible effect in this subgroup of CRS patients. So, in the standard management of CRSsNP, there has been no confirmation about the use of oral antifungal treatment and aggregated grade of evidence is not applicable .

Drug Interactions Of Cephalexin Vs Amoxicillin

Cephalexin may increase the serum concentrations of the common antidiabetic agent metformin. Most courses of cephalexin are a short duration, so the drugs may be used concurrently as long as the patient is monitored.

Amoxicillin may interfere with the serum concentrations of important immunosuppressants. Serum concentrations of methotrexate have been shown to be increased with concurrent use with amoxicillin, while mycophenolate concentrations may be decreased. These immunosuppressant drugs are used in patients with serious conditions, and therefore patients who require the use of amoxicillin while on these drugs should be monitored closely.

Probenecid, when given with cephalexin or amoxicillin, may increase the serum concentrations of either antibiotic. While the use of both at the same time is not contraindicated, patients should be monitored.

What Is Keflex Used For

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Keflex to treat the following infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria:

Keflex works by killing bacteria causing your infection. It is effective against most gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Pneumococcus bacteria. However, Keflex can also act against certain gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis .

Keflex is not used to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections or viral infections such as the common cold or flu. Using antibiotics when they are not needed can lead to their decreased effectiveness and increase your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

Complicated & Recurrent Uti

Treatment for sinus infections

Antibiotics should never be selected empirically for complicated UTI without culture susceptibility results . Management of pyelonephritis, prostatitis, and relapsing or recurrent UTI is often unsuccessful without therapy guided by culture and susceptibility results. However, therapy should be instituted while culture and susceptibility results are being awaited. Rational initial drug choices for complicated UTI include amoxicillin, fluoroquinolones, or trimethoprim-sulfonamide.3

What Is Sinus Infection

Medically known as rhinosinusitis, Sinus infection or Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. Healthy sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. It occurs when your nasal cavities become infected, swollen, and inflamed. Sinusitis is usually caused by a virus and often persists even after other upper respiratory symptoms are gone. In some cases, bacteria, or rarely fungus, may cause a sinus infection.

When Antibiotics Dont Work

Some patients suffer from recurring sinus infections. If your sinus infection does not improve within five to seven days after you finish the whole course of antibiotics, or if you experience another sinus infection within a few weeks, you may be referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for treatment.
