Drug Interactions Of Afrin And Flonase

Although both Afrin and Flonase have primarily a local effect where they are applied topically in the nose, there are some other medications that may interact with them.

Ergot derivatives are a class of medications that may be used to treat migraines. Migranal is a nasal spray ergot derivative that works by causing marked vasoconstriction. The concurrent use of Afrin, which also causes vasoconstriction, would result in an extreme amount of vasoconstriction. This combination should be avoided.

Esketamine is an antidepressant nasal product administered once or twice weekly. Both Afrin and Flonase may decrease the effects of esketamine. If a nasal decongestant is necessary on an esketamine dosing day, the nasal decongestant should be administered at least one hour prior to esketamine.

How Should I Use Flonase Nasal Spray

Use Flonase exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

Do not share this medicine with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.

Your dose will depend on the fluticasone brand or strength you use, and your dose may change once your symptoms improve. Follow all dosing instructions very carefully.

A child using the nasal spray should be supervised by an adult.

Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

Shake the nasal spray just before each use.

If you switched to fluticasone from another steroid medicine, you should not stop using it suddenly. Follow your doctors instructions about tapering your dose.

It may take several days before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment.

How Do You Get Rid Of Rebound Congestion

If you’ve only been using a nasal decongestant spray for a week or so to deal with a head cold, the flu or COVID-19 and your rebound congestion is new, you may be able to quit a nasal decongestant spray without any problem.

If you’ve been using a spray for months or years, however, Dr. Ahmed recommends working with your doctor to form a plan to quit the spray.

“I actually give my patients a specific regimen to follow,” says Dr. Ahmed. “I have them use the spray at night and in just one nostril only. In the meantime, I also have them start a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase, and use a saline spray to help keep the nose moist. Sometimes I also prescribe an oral steroid to help with the inflammation that comes with discontinuing the spray.”

According to Dr. Ahmed, this whole process takes at least a week. By the end of it, though, you’re off the nasal decongestant spray and the rebound congestion should be gone.

That doesn’t always mean the original cause of your congestion is gone, though.

“Once you’re off the decongestant spray, the immediate next question becomes: What caused you to start taking it in the first place?” asks Dr. Ahmed. “If you started using it to deal with a cold or some other upper respiratory virus, that’s easy since the congestion is going to resolve on its own. But if something more complex is causing your congestion, we need to treat that root cause.”

There are four main types of nasal sprays: corticosteroids, nasal decongestants, sodium chloride, and cromolyn sodium.

Corticosteroid and sodium chloride nasal sprays are used to help soothe allergy symptoms such as a stuffy nose. Nasal decongestants relieve nasal congestion in the upper respiratory tract. Cromolyn sodium is an anti-inflammatory medication helpful in treating sinus infections caused by allergies. One of our allergists can determine which spray will best treat your symptoms.

Warnings Of Afrin Vs Flonase

Afrin is only intended to be used in a dosing increment of every 12 hours for not more than three days. Use of this product for any longer than recommended may result in extreme rebound congestion. Afrin may cause temporary discomfort such as stinging, itching, or burning in the nasal passage.

Flonase could slow healing after a nasal procedure or surgery and should not be used until approved by your doctor. If you take systemic steroids or immunosuppressant drugs, such as HIV drugs, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Flonase. Stinging or sneezing may occur immediately after administration. If your symptoms do not improve after seven days of use of Flonase, consult your physician.

Nasal spray containers are intended to be used by a single person. Sharing a nasal spray container may result in infection. Nasal sprays should not be sprayed in the eyes or mouth.

The most common side effects of sinus infection medications differ by the type of medication you use. Decongestants tend to cause nervousness, insomnia, and a loss of appetite.
