What Causes Fungal Sinusitis
There are four types of fungal sinusitis:
Saprophytic FungusThis happens when fungus or mold grows on top of mucus or mucous crusts inside the nose. In this case, the fungus is not really infecting the nasal tissue, its just living off the mucus in the nose. This may not cause any additional symptoms that were not already present, and treatment is simple removal of the crusts with nasal washes or other methods.
Fungus BallThis is caused by fungus getting caught in one of the sinuses, forming clumps of material that often contain bacteria as well. This is most often in the maxillary, or cheek, sinus, and usually occurs in patients whose immune system is working fine. Often there are no symptoms, other than slight discomfort until the fungus ball grows large enough to block off the sinus. This form of fungal sinusitis requires simple surgery to open and wash out the sinus. Anti-fungal therapy is generally not prescribed.
Invasive Fungal SinusitisThis is a severe infection of the nasal and sinus lining that can lead to the destruction of nasal/sinus tissue. There are three different forms of invasive fungal sinusitis:

Herpes Simplex Virus Primary Infection
Symptoms of the primary infection are most likely to develop in children younger than five years old. Symptoms include:
- swollen and irritated gums with small, painful sores in and around the mouth this is known as herpes simplex gingivostomatitis
Herpes simplex gingivostomatitis usually affects young children, but adults can also develop it. It can last 10 to 14 days, with the sores taking up to three weeks to heal. Gingivostomatitis doesn’t usually recur after the primary infection.
Primary herpes simplex viruses are rare in adults. But the symptoms are similar to those experienced by children.
- you’ll usually have a sore throat with or without swollen glands
- you may also have bad breath and painful sores in and around your mouth – these can develop into ulcers with grey or yellow centres
If you develop the herpes simplex virus at an early age, it may be triggered from time to time in later life. It can cause recurring bouts of cold sores.
After the primary infection, the symptoms are usually reduced to just the cold sores themselves.
What Are The Symptoms Of Fungal Sinusitis
Symptoms of fungal sinusitis are similar to other forms of sinusitis, including:
- Nasal congestion
- Loss of smell or foul odor in the nose
Fungal sinusitis can be quite severe in anyone with a compromised immune system, and can cause:
- Changes of the skin
- Numbness of the face
- Facial swelling of cheeks or eyelids
Complications Of Cold Sores
Cold sores are usually mild, but may cause complications in rare cases. People with weak immune systems caused by illness or treatments such as chemotherapy are particularly at risk of complications.
If the infection affects the mouth or throat, dehydration sometimes occurs if drinking fluids becomes painful. Young children are particularly at risk of becoming dehydrated.

Your Sinuses And Infections
Youve got four air-filled cavities in your head, behind your cheekbones, forehead, and near your eyes. These serve as warming filters for the air you breathe, and they also produce mucus, used to naturally clean your nose under normal conditions.
When your sinuses are affected by infection, these normally empty spaces become filled with fluid. This congestion causes the throbbing pressure sensations you associate with having a cold. Its hard to breathe, your face can feel tender, and you may have a near-constant headache.
Your ears may be plugged, making it hard to hear and throwing your balance off. Your sense of smell may change, and the sound of your voice is different. Youre achy and tired, and you could be running a fever.
