Whats Causing Your Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion, commonly referred to as a stuffy nose, is the obstruction to the flow of air in and out of the nose due to the blood vessels inside the nose becoming inflamed and the tissues inside the nose swelling.

Nasal congestion is a very common condition. Nasal congestion can be caused by anything that irritates or inflames the tissues inside the nose. This includes minor illnesses like the common cold or sinus infection, which will typically improve within a week.

If your stuffy nose has persisted for more than a week, it often indicates an underlying health issue that you need to look into and get appropriate treatment.

Some underlying causes of nasal congestion that lasts longer than a week are:

  • Non-cancerous growth called nasal polyps, including benign tumours in the nasal passages

Nasal congestion may also occur during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations and a surge in blood supply. Pregnant women may experience this during the end of their first trimester. These changes may cause the tissue inside the nose to become inflamed, dry or even bleed.

How To Use Mucinex

Take this medication by mouth with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually every 12 hours with a full glass of water. If you are self-treating, follow all directions on the product package. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. Do not take more than 2400 milligrams in 24 hours. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often than directed.

Do not crush or chew this medication. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Also, do not split the tablets unless they have a score line and your doctor or pharmacist tells you to do so. Swallow the whole or split tablet without crushing or chewing.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. Fluids will help to break up mucus and clear congestion.

Tell your doctor if your condition returns, or if it is accompanied by fever, severe sore throat, rash, persistent headache, or if it persists or worsens after 7 days. These may be signs of a serious medical problem. Seek immediate medical attention if you think you may have a serious medical problem.

Things To Note When Using A Decongestant

If you have health conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease or an enlarged prostate, take note that your condition could be made worse by the use of decongestants.

Its best to seek the advice of a healthcare provider before you begin using it.

Take special care to make sure youre not consuming more than one decongestant. Multiple decongestants may have similar active ingredients that add up to be too much medicine and taking more than the recommended amount can be dangerous.

What Are The Main Differences Between Claritin And Claritin

The main difference between Claritin and Claritin-D is that Claritin-D contains an added ingredient called pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that is added for further relief of nasal congestion and sinus pressure. Because pseudoephedrine is a stimulant decongestant, Claritin-D may cause different side effects compared to Claritin.

Claritin is a second-generation antihistamine that may cause drowsiness. However, second-generation antihistamines cause less drowsiness compared to first-generation antihistamines such asBenadryl . Unlike Claritin alone, Claritin-D has the potential to cause trouble sleeping due to the stimulant effects of pseudoephedrine.

Claritin can be used in adults and children 2 years of age and older while Claritin-D can only be used in adults and children 12 years of age and older. Regular Claritin is usually taken once daily whereas Claritin-D comes in 12-hour and 24-hour formulations 12-hour Claritin-D can be taken twice daily and 24-hour Claritin-D can be taken once daily for full effects.

Antihistamines For A Stuffy Nose

Antihistamines work by blocking histamines a chemical found in the body cells, which causes swelling and irritation in your nasal tissues. This chemical also causes nose swelling, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and even itching.

While antihistamines cant block every allergy symptom, theyre particularly effective at preventing nasal congestion and helping some of those uncomfortable symptoms ebb away.

Drug Interactions Of Claritin And Claritin

Sinus Health: CURE Sinusitis

Claritin and Claritin-D both contain loratadine, which has the potential to interact with several drugs. Taking loratadine with amiodarone may lead to an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythm such as Torsades de pointes.

Loratadine can also interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors such as erythromycin and ketoconazole. Taking these drugs with loratadine may cause an increased level of loratadine in the body which can, in turn, increase the risk of adverse effects. Taking cimetidine with loratadine may also have the same effect.

The pseudoephedrine component of Claritin-D can also interact with other drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors , beta blockers, and digoxin. Taking any of these drugs with pseudoephedrine can lead to adverse effects that affect the vascular system and heart.

Can Musinex Help Ear Problems

Asked
21 Aug 2010 by Jack Roland

My doctor recommended trying Musinex for humming in my left ear when I yawn or burp. Is it likely to help eliminate the noise?

Added 21 Aug 2010:

The doctor also recommended the use of flonase for the humming sound. Can musinex and flonase be taken together? Which is more likely to relieve the sound?

Added 2 Sep 2010:

I have now been on Flonase and Musinex for almost two weeks. I still have the humming, which seems to last longer than it was when I yawn or burp, Is there anything else I can try? I have tried the valsalva maneuver many times to no avail. In fact, it may have even caused the hum to last longer.

Added 2 Sep 2010:

I wanted to mention that I held my nose while ducking under water several times the week before the humming started.

Benefits Of Antihistamines For Allergies

Because antihistamines prevent the release of histamine, they dry up the excess fluids that lead to excessive tearing and a runny nose. Most antihistamines also include compounds that reduce the itching and irritation that can make your eyes feel as if they have sand in them. They inhibit the urge to sneeze and can also minimize irritation in the throat that leads to coughing.

Antihistamine medications should be taken once a day and will last for a full 24 hours. They have minimal side effects and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. There are many different types of antihistamines on the market. The top four include:

  • Zyrtec® â Zyrtec , comes in both pill form and liquid capsule. Itâs used to treat upper respiratory allergies but is also effective for skin rashes and hives. It offers quick relief with few side effects or drug interactions.
  • Claritin® â Claritin is a popular allergy medication because it can be taken safely by both adults and children. It comes in pill form and is used to treat seasonal allergies, skin rashes, and hives. It offers few side effects and can be purchased over the counter or with a prescription.

Remember that generics work just as well as brand-names. Itâs important that you read labels carefully so you only by the products that address your particular symptoms. If you have questions, always speak to your doctor or a specialist before you buy a particular product.

How Claritin And Claritin

Claritin Allergy & Sinus Extra Strength/Non Drowsy 24 hour

Claritin and Claritin-D are brand-name medications that contain a drug called loratadine. Loratadine is also available in a generic version.

Loratadine is an antihistamine. An antihistamine blocks a substance that your body releases when its exposed to allergens, or things your body is sensitive to. This released substance is called histamine. By blocking histamine, Claritin and Claritin-D block the allergic reaction. This helps relieve allergy symptoms such as:

  • itchy or watery eyes
  • itchy nose or throat

While Claritin contains just one drug, loratadine, Claritin-D contains two drugs. In addition to loratadine, Claritin-D also contains a decongestant called pseudoephedrine. Because it contains a decongestant, Claritin-D also:

  • reduces congestion and pressure in your childs sinuses
  • increases drainage of secretions from your childs sinuses

Claritin-D comes as an extended-release tablet your child takes by mouth. The tablet releases the drug slowly into your childs body over 12 or 24 hours, depending on the form.

Like most drugs, Claritin and Claritin-D have some side effects as well as some warnings.
